The statistics on suicide are staggering. According to the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention, in 1997 in the USA more teenagers and young adults died from suicide than from cancer, heart disease, AIDS, birth defects, stroke, pneumonia, influenza and chronic lung disease combined. It is also an international epidemic.

Susan Blauner is the perfect emissary for a message of hope and a program of action for these millions of people. She's been though it, and speaks and writes eloquently about feelings and fantasies surrounding suicide.

From Publishers Weekly
For 18 years, Blauner survived obsessive suicidal thoughts with the help of three psychiatric hospitalizations, an excellent therapist, 12-step support groups, "spiritual exploration," Prozac and a network of family and friends. This personal account of what worked for her offers excellent practical advice to "teach you how to get through those excruciating moments when every cell in your brain and body is screaming, `I want to die!' " Approaching "suicidal thoughts" as an addiction, Blauner clearly explains how some people's "brain style" responds to environmental stresses or "triggers" with obsessive suicidal thoughts rather than cravings for alcohol or other drugs. Strongly influenced by the very successful 12-step model, she fashions a patchwork of strategies for understanding, preventing and treating suicidal "gestures," which she asserts are not actually attempts to die but efforts to stop unbearable psychological pain. Childhood sexual abuse and the death of her mother when she was 14 contributed to Blauner's long struggle, but she herself had to make the decision and effort to begin therapy at age 19, before her problem was even recognized or treated. Now Blauner provides others like herself with "Tricks of the Trade" that can literally save lives. With neither hollow platitudes nor medical doublespeak, she covers brain function, antidepressants, finding a good therapist, identifying triggers, creating a "Crisis Plan" for critical moments and heading off suicidal thoughts by coping with hunger, anger, loneliness and fatigue. Blauner provides an extremely valuable and much-needed tool for both suicidal thinkers and their loved ones. B&w illus.

From Library Journal
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, suicide is the eighth leading cause of death for all Americans and the third leading cause of death for those ages 15 to 24. Yet as Blauner points out, suicide is rarely talked about openly. In her heartfelt and important book, Blauner, who has survived multiple suicide attempts and developed a statewide suicide prevention program for teens in Massachusetts, offers guidance and hope for those contemplating ending their lives. The story of her 18-year struggle with suicidal impulses is followed by a concise explanation of the biochemical process inside the brain of a suicidal thinker. The bulk of the book consists of her 25 personal "tricks of the trade," practical, safe alternative activities any suicidal thinker can employ to "outthink" his or her brain and stay alive. These include asking for help, keeping emergency contact information handy, creating a crisis plan, keeping a journal, practicing meditation, and attending support groups, to name just a few. The chapter on helping others will be useful for mental health professionals. A resource list includes numerous crisis hotline telephone numbers, web sites, and contact information for support organizations. This vital resource is recommended for all public libraries. The pain of Suicidal Ideation
By Deirdre D. Forbes
I'm a therapist who has worked with many individuals who struggle with the relentless idea of suicide being an option. This book, written by a young woman who has traveled that same road will 1. demonstrate to those whose isolative beliefs double their suffering, will come to understand they are not alone. 2. Be able to separate themselves from their disease and make use of the idea that the individual is not wishing to kill themselves but the disease is telling them to. and finally 3. the author shares methods of distraction she utilized to keep her from acting on her thoughts some will find useful. Both professionals and those with major depression should find this helpful.

PLEASE READ - VERY IMPORTANT
By Jeff
This book saved my life today. Here, as I write this review on 7/8/2012. Without the words and comfort offered by the author of this book, I would have been dead on this day at about 11:00 AM, from a shotgun blast to the head.

IF YOU ARE HERE READING THIS RIGHT NOW, CALL Call 1-800-SUICIDE / 1-800-784-2433 or 1-800-273-8255. DO NOT WAIT ANOTHER MOMENT. THE FACT THAT YOU ARE HERE READING THIS MEANS THAT YOUR SITUATION IS SERIOUS, NO MATTER WHAT YOUR BRAIN TELLS YOU, THIS IS VERY, VERY SERIOUS. DO NOT SHRUG IT OFF.

***PLEASE**** PICK UP THE PHONE, RIGHT NOW AND CALL Call 1-800-SUICIDE / 1-800-784-2433 or 1-800-273-8255 (The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline). I am telling you this because I know how bad you are feeling, and even though you don't know me, I love you because I know what you are feeling and have felt it myself, and want to help you. The way I can help you is if you make the call. I care about you, and so do the people at that telephone number...it is true, they do not know you, but they are there because they know what you are going through, and are waiting for your call because they love you. It's OK, go ahead, pick up the phone and call Call 1-800-SUICIDE / 1-800-784-2433 or 1-800-273-8255. Do not be afraid, the people there are caring people, and want to help you. Please pick up the phone and call, do it now. And then continue reading this after you have finished the phone call.

If, after you have made that call, you are still feeling bad, drive yourself or have someone drive you to a hospital as soon as possible and tell the hospital staff that you are feeling suicidal. No one will judge you. They understand, and are there to help you. Even though they do not know you, they also love you, as I do. If there is no one to take you to the hospital, call the hospital and tell the operator that you are suicidal and need help. They will send people to help you and bring you to the hospital. Do not be ashamed. They understand, they have been trained to do this and to help people in situations like ours.

***AFTER*** YOU HAVE MADE THE CALL to the hotline and/or have been at the hospital, THEN PURCHASE THE KINDLE EDITION OF THIS BOOK AND BEGIN READING IT ON YOUR PC OR MAC. (You do NOT need the actual kindle to begin reading it, you can download the kindle sofware from Amazon here [...]). PURCHASE THIS KINDLE BOOK NO MATTER WHAT YOUR BRAIN TELLS YOU. You can purchase the paperback book which will come in the mail in a few days if you wish (I did this too), but like me, you may need to begin reading it right now and do not have time to wait while the book comes in the mail so BUY THE KINDLE BOOK NOW AND START READING.

I will now tell you my story...

It was Saturday evening (7/7/2012), and I was about 10 hours away from the end of my life. The previous week I had spent circling Gander Mountain in my car from time to time broken and in tears, thinking about what size shotgun I would purchase so I could turn the barrel around and still reach the trigger.

I was sitting in my car in the parking lot, 20 yards away from the store entrance, crying, knowing that it was getting pretty close to the end. I had spent the previous days drafting suicide notes in my mind, now all I needed were the gun and a round of ammunition. I wiped away the tears and prepared to calm down enough to approach the gun counter and purchase the gun.

Everything had gone wrong in my life. I had made mistake, after mistake, after mistake. Job loss, foreclosure, bankruptcy, family problems and lack of family emotional support, legal problems and trouble with the law. Nothing seemed to get better, it was just one thing after another. I cried in the parking lot, sobbing to myself "I just can't do it anymore."

By some miracle I was able to drive myself out of that parking lot twice that week, barely hanging on. That Saturday evening, while doing the research online for suicide methods and reading suicide quotes, I became convinced that there was no way out for me. Legal troubles and fees and bills were piling up that I knew I would not be able to pay. I had a court date coming up with possible jail time. That next morning, at 10:00 AM, I was going to go to Gander Mountain and purchase the shotgun. This was it. It was firmly cemented in my mind.

I had read many books on depression in the past, and had been to therapy on and off. None of that seemed to help me in my darkest hour. By some miracle, in my searching the internet last night (Saturday 7/7/2012), I came accross this book.

This was the book that saved my life today. I began reading the preview of the book online, and then I ordered the kindle edition right then and there and downloaded it to my PC (I don't have a kindle, and used the Amazon kindle software for my PC) and started reading it at about midnight. It provided a shelter from the pain, and help from someone who had been there and was offering an outstretched hand to help. I read for an hour or so last night, and then some this morning. Tomorrow (Monday) I will be contacting a therapist and will receive more help and support.

I am writing this because I know what you are going through, I know how bad it hurts. I know the feeling of finality that comes with the decision to commit suicide. I do not not know who you are, and you do not know me, but know that there is love in the world because I am here today extending my hand and heart to you because I love you, and want to help you. When it seems that no one else will listen or understand, I am here with you right now as you read this, I am here to help you. Please, please, please...call the hotline 1-800-273-8255. Get to a hospital if you need to, and then buy this book. I am not in any way associated with the author or publisher of this book or Amazon. I am a man, aged 41, who reached the end of his rope, and almost pulled the trigger. This book saved my life. And it will save you too. This is the most important $9 you will ever spend, because it will provide an immediate shelter from your suffering, and a place where you can begin to safely build a new life.

KNOW THAT I AM HERE FOR YOU, RIGHT HERE, RIGHT NOW. I LOVE YOU. Please do these things...

1. Call Call 1-800-SUICIDE / 1-800-784-2433 or 1-800-273-8255. They care about you, and love you, and are there to help
2. If you are still feeling bad after making this call, go to the hospital or have someone drive you there or call the hospital.
3. Order the kindle edition of this book and start reading
4. Contact local mental health professionals and start therapy. They understand and are there to help you.

Do these things, and you will make it through this. I promise.

With Love,

Jeff

Contesting Identities: Sports in American Film, by Aaron Baker

Since the earliest days of the silent era, American filmmakers have been drawn to the visual spectacle of sports and their compelling narratives of conflict, triumph, and individual achievement. In "Contesting Identities", Aaron Baker examines how these cinematic representations of sports and athletes have evolved over time - from The Pinch Hitter and Buster Keaton's College to White Men Can't Jump, Jerry Maguire, and Girlfight. He focuses on how identities have been constructed and transcended in American society since the early twentieth century. Whether depicting team or individual sports, these films return to that most American of themes, the master narrative of self-reliance. Baker shows that even as sports films tackle socially constructed identities like class, race, ethnicity, sexuality, and gender, they ultimately underscore transcendence of these identities through self-reliance.Looking at films from almost every sporting genre - with a particular focus on movies about boxing, baseball, basketball, and football - "Contesting Identities" maps the complex cultural landscape depicted in American sports films and the ways in which stories about 'subaltern' groups winning acceptance by the mainstream majority can serve to reinforce the values of that majority. In addition to discussing the genre's recurring dramatic tropes, from the populist prizefighter to the hot-headed rebel to the 'manly' female athlete, Baker also looks at the social and cinematic impacts of real-life sports figures from Jackie Robinson and Babe Didrikson Zaharias to Muhammad Ali and Michael Jordan.'A must-read for cinephiles and sports fans alike, "Contesting Identites" is a knock-out. Aaron Baker cogently combines previous work on identities, sports, and media and moves discussion to new levels. His analysis of how race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, and class are represented in feature sports films are consistently thought-provoking and intriguing' - Chris Holmlund, author of "Impossible Bodies: Femininity and Masculinity" at the Movies.

Good organization, real practical tips, and a beautiful collection of landscape paintings from many artists
By Toonie R
Many artists limit their selection of paintings in their books to their own works. This book, in contrast, includes the artist's own works (particularly when she is showing, step by step, how she goes about painting), but also works from many other magnificent landscape artists. (In fact, this book first came to my attention because the cover features a work by Renato Muccillo). The paintings are very well selected to illustrate particular points she's making. I love that the instruction in this book encompasses both the big picture and the nitty gritty (such as brush techniques). While many art books are geared to beginners, this is an excellent art book that I believe has a lot to offer even for advanced painters. I consider myself intermediate, and it's perfect for me.

Pair with Albala and Carlson, and you have everything you need on landscape painting technique
By Harold Roth
I would put this together with Mitchell Albala's book in terms of helpfulness and beautiful images (and in fact Albala has a couple of paintings in this one, and I love his work, but I especially enjoyed the works here by Renato Muccillo). Although I paint in acrylics, not oils, I've been struggling with techniques I relied on in watercolor that don't work as well in acrylic. Most acrylic painting books seem to focus on gimmicks like gold leaf or carving shapes in gesso, and that is not what I want to do. I've looked at some other books on oil painting but they often relied on wet-in-wet and/or painterly techniques, which is not something I want to do with acrylics. I could see right away that this book gives many examples of the painter working over a dry layer, which is what I do, so these are techniques I can use. I have seen many examples of so-called Old Master type painting that involves toning the support, but I had not seen any colors used for that besides grays and earths. This is the first time I saw someone toning with cadmium orange. Right away I wanted to try that. I also appreciated the description of a flake white hue made from 1 parts titanium and 2 parts zinc. I have just begun working with white (since it's a no-no in watercolor, I never used it until the past year or so), and this formulation I will definitely try. The step-by-step paintings of clouds are especially helpful. Lots of good stuff here!

In The Middle
By Stuart Schulz
This book begins slowly, seemingly buried under a thick layer of verbiage and beautiful thoughts, without much practical application. Like music, you just can't read about art technique for long without dozing off. I almost gave up, thinking she might make a better writer than painter. But the quality of the art led me on, and by the middle of the book, the author stopped talking and started showing, and the book suddenly came alive...her observations and suggestions were first class, even for me--a long-term landscapist. I think next time she should just drop the first fifty pages and begin "in medias res" as the Greeks used to say, or maybe the Zoroastrians, I forget.

Develop your own trading system with practical guidance and expert advice

In Building Algorithmic Trading Systems: A Trader's Journey From Data Mining to Monte Carlo Simulation to Live Training, award-winning trader Kevin Davey shares his secrets for developing trading systems that generate triple-digit returns. With both explanation and demonstration, Davey guides you step-by-step through the entire process of generating and validating an idea, setting entry and exit points, testing systems, and implementing them in live trading. You'll find concrete rules for increasing or decreasing allocation to a system, and rules for when to abandon one. The companion website includes Davey's own Monte Carlo simulator and other tools that will enable you to automate and test your own trading ideas.

A purely discretionary approach to trading generally breaks down over the long haul. With market data and statistics easily available, traders are increasingly opting to employ an automated or algorithmic trading system—enough that algorithmic trades now account for the bulk of stock trading volume. Building Algorithmic Trading Systems teaches you how to develop your own systems with an eye toward market fluctuations and the impermanence of even the most effective algorithm.

  • Learn the systems that generated triple-digit returns in the World Cup Trading Championship
  • Develop an algorithmic approach for any trading idea using off-the-shelf software or popular platforms
  • Test your new system using historical and current market data
  • Mine market data for statistical tendencies that may form the basis of a new system

Market patterns change, and so do system results. Past performance isn't a guarantee of future success, so the key is to continually develop new systems and adjust established systems in response to evolving statistical tendencies. For individual traders looking for the next leap forward, Building Algorithmic Trading Systems provides expert guidance and practical advice.

Review
"Winner, 2014 Trading Book of The Year - Superior Trading And Resource (STAR) Award" - TraderPlanet.com

"Kevin Davey has a unique understanding of systems and the markets I have only seen in a few people over the years.  90% of trading books written today are useless.  This book impressed me.  This book is a must read for anyone who is interested in trading using a systematic approach.  I put this book on my list of the top 50 most useful books on trading of all time. "
- Murray A. Ruggiero, Jr. - Chief Systems Designer at Tuttle Tactical Management, Contributing Editor of Futures Magazine, Author of "Cybernetic Trading Strategies" and "Using Easy Language 9.X."

Great Eye Opener for Anyone Getting Into Automated Trading
"I typically don't buy trading books anymore having read 100+ already. Why? Because most are the same regurgitated thoughts, patterns, analysis and strategies.
I recently met Kevin on LinkedIn. After swapping a few emails, I quickly realized that he understands how to build and trade systems.
His book is a simple and quick read even if you don't know anything about systems or programming. If you want a true taste of what its like to build trading systems you should read his book. "
- Chris Vermeulen, Founder of AlgoTrades.net

Review

“This is a great book to get a much better understanding of what in really involved in system development and help on your journey from someone with a lot of real-life trading experience. For those already working with systems, it may challenge some of the approaches you use and help you to become a better system developer and trader. From my perspective, the chance to look over Kevin’s shoulder and see the concepts and full code from some systems he has been using in his own trading alone would be of far more value than the cost of the book.”
—Tim Rea, Proprietary systems developer/trader; 1st place winner, World Cup Championship of Futures Trading® 2011

“Part Reminiscences of a Stock Operator and part Market Wizards, Kevin Davey has written a superb book for the modern trader. Not only does Kevin provide a step-by-step plan on how to develop algorithmic trading strategies but he actually reveals the strategy he used to win The World Cup Championship Of Futures Trading® along with two additional euro currency systems. I have no doubt this will become a popular and often referenced book amongst traders. Readers will find Kevin’s humble and engaging voice easy to follow and grasp. They will also find his personal journey from aerospace engineer to beginner trader, to a championship winning trader and finally to a full time professional trader insightful, entertaining, and inspiring. Wiley should also be congratulated for recruiting a real trader who trades real markets with real money to write a trading book for people aspiring to become real traders. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is serious about developing a successful and sustainable trading career.”
—Brent Penfold, professional trader and author of The Universal Principles of Successful Trading (Wiley 2010)

“Few trading books on the market today are written by those who actually make their living from trading and those that are frequently suffer from being unintelligible to the layman. Kevin Davey has the authenticity of a real trader and the ability to distill complex ideas into a format that is easy to read and, at times, brutally honest. For those aspiring to trading success, Kevin gives a step by step guide on how to approach systems development as well as outlining many of the pitfalls to avoid and throughout the book he provides a wealth of information and tools that will prove invaluable to novice or expert alike.”
—Michael Cook, Founder, Katmai Capital Advisors; World Cup Championship of Futures Trading® 2007

“Of all the trading books that I’ve read, this book takes the cake. Kevin Davey brings us a realistic perspective in an industry full of dreamers. I suggest that all traders drop what they’re doing and read the incredibly valuable lessons summed up in this book.  This book is the quickest path for a new trader to stop dreaming and start succeeding.”
—Peter Hagen, Citracado Capital, LLC

Praise for BUILDING WINNING ALGORITHMIC TRADING SYSTEMS

"Kevin Davey was awarded either first or second place three years in a row in the World Cup Championship of Futures Trading®. I'm typically not impressed with that sort of performance, but I think Kevin is an exception. Why? First, he published my feedback about winning the contest and what he learned from it. He then goes on to not only give a complete approach to algorithms, but also talks about how your psychology can still sabotage you. Finally, he spends a lot of time talking about objectives and position sizing. This is a very impressive book."
—Dr. Van K. Tharp, author of Trading Beyond the Matrix: The Red Pill for Traders and Investors (Wiley), Founder, Van Tharp Institute, www.vantharp.com

"Kevin's book is a good beginner's guide to systems trading, a Trading Computer Strategies 101."
—Bob Pardo, Pardo Capital, author of The Evaluation and Optimization of Trading Strategies (Wiley)

"This book is a must read! It is not a simple list of rules to trade better; it is a journey through the trading life of the author. The author Kevin will let the man Kevin become your friend, sharing his path to becoming a successful trader."
—Andrea Unger, World Cup Championship of Futures Trading® Winner 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012

"Successful technical traders believe they have skills that allow them to beat the market. But are these traders really skillful or are they just lucky? This book details the experience of a successful trader who has devoted significant time to designing dynamic trading strategies that attempt to exploit market inefficiencies. Perhaps it is traders like these that drive markets towards efficiency, or perhaps these traders just have a deeper understanding of markets and human psychology and therefore are able to capture some rents. The debate on market efficiency will continue to rage. In the meantime, perhaps we can learn from this journey of a successful trader."
—Peter Ritchken, Kenneth Walter Haber Professor, Department of Banking and Finance, Weatherhead School of Management, Case Western Reserve University

"The winning trader is rare. The quantitative winning trader is even more rare. Kevin Davey's book Building Winning Algorithmic Trading Systems is the rarest of all gems. It is a book that tells the quantitative trader how to build a quantitative trading system. It should be the textbook for all would-be quantitative hedge funds. I highly recommend this book to all traders, even those that do not use quantitative methods."
—Kurt K. Sakaeda, World Cup Championship of Futures Trading® Winner 2000 and 2004

"This book is so much more than systems trading! I've encountered a plethora of trading books, but this book is the first that I've thoroughly enjoyed reading from cover to cover. Through personal accounts, he offers a candid, responsible, and highly colorful tour of the futures markets and system building. This book is not just for algo traders, nor is it just for a particular skill level; I believe traders of all types and sizes will find something in this book to better their odds of market success."
—Carley Garner, Senior Analyst at DeCarleyTrading.com

Book is on TESTING strategies, not BUILDING strategies!
By Randy May
I have to give this 3 stars because it is badly mistitled. The correct title of this book should be "Testing Algorithmic Trading Systems" because that is exactly what the book is all about. There is virtually nothing in the book about BUILDING algorithmic trading systems (winning or otherwise), or providing ideas on how to build a WINNING strategy (such as a discussion of successful approaches to trade entries, exits, managing trades in the areas of stop losses, profit stops, trailing stops, etc. ... all of which combine to make a "winning" system).

If you are interested in discussions of how to actually build winning trading systems this is not the book for you as it is devoid of any such information. But if you already have strategy ideas and want to learn more about how to test them thoroughly then that is what this book is all about, and it is very easy to read and follow. I'd give it 4 stars if it was titled correctly.

Destined to become a algorithmic classic
By Jonathan M.
I recently purchased Building Algorithmic Trading Systems: A Trader's Journey From Data Mining to Monte Carlo Simulation to Live Trading (Wiley Trading) I found the book to be very detailed and true to its title.

This book is a comprehensive look at the authors logical and honest comprehensive approach to algorithmic trading. I say logical because even the rank beginner to the experienced trader can learn from his logical stepwise approach. This isn't a book that bogs the reader down with mathematical formulas but clearly illustrates important concepts that must be understood to follow the authors thought process.

What i appreciate are the clear lessons learned that are shared throughout the book. I find it rare that someone of his caliber( he is someone you can at least attempt to do due diligence on, a real algorithmic trader with verifiable multi-year experience with his own real money accounts generating over 100% annual returns ) would share not only his success but also his many failures that led to his growth and development as a trader.

I found this a breath of fresh air given the number of books and educational content produced by people who flat out don't trade real money or hide the fact that they are so confident in their methods that all they can do is trade sim instead of real money and have a multitude of excuses of why they don't have any verifiable performance yet can talk a good sales game selling you on their confidence in their methods.

Well back to the book. It is my belief that if one applies the lessons learned that one can develop good trading system development habits that can increase the odds of finding and deploying a system that has a chance of surviving the markets and by studying the lessons learned potentially saving thousands of dollars in the process of becoming a successful systematic trader. Unfortunately some of the readers like myself will recognize many of the school of hard knocks lessons learned the hard and expensive way.

The book is surprisingly complete covering the development process in detail with very good illustrations to the real world monitoring process and illustrates several scenarios that every automated algorithmic trader is likely to face. Throughout the book the tone is helpful and positive with the author taking the attitude" this is what I have that works for me ( with thorough explanation of his thought process) your standards/requirement may be different and that's ok"

I think this book is a must read for all algorithmic traders and those who have yet to find their algorithmic approach

The Next Level Trading Step
By Avid Amazon Customer/Reader
Excellent read for those interested in taking their beginning or intermediate level trading systems to the next level. Whether you choose to follow Mr. Davey's current methodology or develop your own, this is an excellent source book to build from. Better yet, the disciplined reader can develop their own trading systems, based on information the author's discusses in great detail about his proven trading system approaches and system development's. Great book..!!..

In Search of Captain Zero: A Surfer's Road Trip Beyond the End of the Road, by Allan Weisbecker

In 1996, Allan Weisbecker sold his home and his possessions, loaded his dog and surfboards into his truck, and set off in search of his long-time surfing companion, Patrick, who had vanished into the depths of Central America. In this rollicking memoir of his quest from Mexico to Costa Rica to unravel the circumstances of Patrick's disappearance, Weisbecker intimately describes the people he befriended, the bandits he evaded, the waves he caught and lost en route to finding his friend.

In Search of Captain Zero is, according to Outside magazine, "A subtly affecting tale of friendship and duty. [It] deserves a spot on the microbus dashboard as a hell of a cautionary tale about finding paradise and smoking it away."

Amazon.com Review
In 1966, Allan Weisbecker "made a Manhattan run from the landlocked suburbs" to take in a siren-song movie called The Endless Summer, a documentary that depicted the carefree life of two beach bums who roamed the world in quest of the perfect wave. Weisbecker was hooked, and he became a hardcore wave rider, a fixture on the Long Island surf scene. With a friend, Christopher, he also undertook illegal ways to finance his passion, transporting drugs from exotic countries, a business only briefly interrupted when Christopher went off to Vietnam. There he took fire and came home scarred; something in him changed, and one day he simply vanished.

Weisbecker's book, a sort of gonzo detective story blended with travelogue and peppered with hang-10 jargon, does many things, all of them very well indeed. It offers up a vision of innocent times brought to ruin by war and drugs; it recounts his search for his lost friend, whose life had gone from bad to worse far away from home; and it affords a look inside the strange culture of surfing, whose masters "understood, in a visceral and soulful and inexpressible way, the machinations of the sea, and, by subtle inference, the universe at large."

Full of regret and exhilaration, Weisbecker's memoir is a fine chronicle of a dream gone sour and a friendship redeemed. --Gregory McNamee

From Publishers Weekly
The foundation of Weisbecker's book packing all of his belongings and his dog into a camper and heading for Central America in search of surf and self, a couple of years short of his 50th birthday has all the makings of a trite, midlife crisis memoir. But the author's flair for describing natural beauty, and his strong sense of narrative rhythm and uncompromising candor, make for a lovely personal reflection that mixes the right amount of dreamy meditation with page-turning allure. Weisbecker (Cosmic Banditos) leaves his Long Island home in search of his childhood friend Christopher, who undertook a similar journey five years earlier and whose only correspondence has been a cryptic postcard signed "Captain Zero." Interspersed in Weisbecker's reports of the people he meets and his neatly composed descriptions of surfing are stories from his past that pace the book, including a hilarious account involving Christopher, an 80-foot banana boat, 10 tons of Colombian marijuana and the front yard of an unsuspecting homeowner on the Housatonic River. Weisbecker clearly delights in storytelling as much as he enjoys language itself, though his writing can get top-heavy; he describes a friend's pest problem as "a zoomorphically motile disarrangement of darting mini-saurians along with fist-sized arachnids and their flossy nets." But usually his imaginative power is better spent, as when he describes an approaching thunderstorm: "The air is charged, buzzing and tingly with ionic discharge seeking ground; then with blinding, brittle bolts that air erupts, illuminating like overexposed photographs the landscape and adjoining sea." Such imagery with a balance of pathos and humor make Weisbecker's account very worthwhile reading.

From Library Journal
The disappearance of a friend persuaded screenwriter, novelist, and surfer Weisbecker (Cosmic Banditos) to sell his Long Island home and travel through Mexico and Central America. The trip had the dual purpose of surfing waves and searching for his missing friend (nicknamed "Captain Zero"). The product of this two-year journey, this volume describes Weisbecker's adventures with a lively variety of people he met along the way. Weisbecker's is not the usual traveler's account of Latin America, focusing as it does on personal issues of life and commitment. This volume will be of interest to libraries with travel collections but of little value to Latin American collections, primarily because of limited descriptions of the actual countries visited. Solid and fun read!
By dbines
What a great read! I'm an avid surfer and also a vanlife enthusiast. Reading a greatly written story about someone fleeing the country to live in their camper and surf their way down through Mexico and Central America hits home for me. I enjoyed every minute of my read and if you have any common interests in these things I strongly suggest picking this book up and giving it a go. I'm willing to bet you'll end up snagging his other books as well!

Heart of Darkness meets Barbarian Days
By Michael T
Heart of Darkness meets Barbarian Days, with a little drug running thrown in. This is Weisbecker's best work and shows him as a master story teller. The stories of pot smuggling are hilarious and frightening, the highlight of the book for me. It is a page turner and hard to put down once you get started. It helps if you are a surfer to get into this, but I think anyone who likes adventures would enjoy this.

"We've all read about the high rollers who go boom and bust, but this book is different. Packed with straightforward prose, practical knowledge and honest counsel, Diary of a Professional Commodity Trader delivers far more than the title promises. Peter Brandt methodically explains what no one has before: how a dedicated individual can trade for a living. If that is your destination, this is your ticket. "

"This book is insanely great. The refreshing clarity this book brings to the table is brilliant. I think this is an amazing, excellent book, one that could help a whole new generation of traders."
-Jack Sparrow, MercenaryTrader.com

"This is the most honest trading book of the last decade. Peter tracks recent trials and tribulations on his path to success dating back to the 1980s. He shares numerous insights into the emotional and technical challenges of trading, right down to his track record over the years. Peter candidly documents a recent trading period. His ultimate success reflects the importance of staying true to a process while still allowing flexibility to modify rules as market conditions change. Anyone desiring longevity in the business really needs to read this book."
- Linda Raschke, trader, President of LBRGroup, Inc., and co-author of the best selling book, Street Smarts-High Probability Short Term Trading Strategies.

"Almost every book about trading for a living is either fraudulent or boring (or both). This book is neither. Not only is it a good read for anyone seriously wanting to know what trading is really like, it is also very interesting, mostly due to its real-time, diary format. As someone who has done myself what he describes, I highly recommend it."
- Robert Zellner, Independent trader, former director of Chicago Mercantile Exchange and former CEO, Citicorp Futures Corp

"Trading is not what most people think it is, as you will find out in this real life experience from Peter Brandt, a well-seasoned trader. You will learn what he looks for in trades, what tells him to hop aboard and how to get out. Well worth reading!"
- Larry Williams, author and trader, www.ireallytrade.com

"Anyone interested in trading---and not just commodity trading---is going to cherish this book. In a world that tends to become intoxicated with "magic formulas" Peter Brandt provides the necessary sobering balance: the "secret," if there is any such thing, is in recognizing your basic human weaknesses and strengths and working with them, in the context of some relatively simple rules that are effective if you are persistent. The light that Brandt shines on the inner monologue of trading is of incalculable value. There are many ways to extract profits from the markets, but none of them matter if you can't control yourself---for that we need self recognition and self analysis: Brandt's detailed diary is like a great novel, revealing the inner life and character of a trader, revealing the kinds of inner understanding we all need if we hope to navigate an ultimately unknowable future. Traders would do well to try to become, as individuals, more like Peter Brandt."
- Lowell Miller President & CIO Miller/Howard Investments, Inc., author of The Single Best Investment

"Mr. Brandt takes the reader far beyond mere descriptions of classical trading patterns. His book offers insights, observations and practical information gleaned from over two decades of consistently successful trading performance. A must read for anyone wishing to enter the world of risk."
--Daniel Chesler, CMT, President, Chesler Analytics LLC

"Peter provides a fascinating real-world look at commodity trading. This book is a must read for anyone who contemplates being an effective trader. His exquisite use of charting techniques is spot on. And, of course we could not agree with him more regarding the importance of charts in the trader's perspective."
- Eero Pikat, President, Barchart.com, Inc.

"A great book for advanced and beginning traders! The professional trading insights that Peter shares can help traders speed up the progress of their own trading by light years."

Amazon Exclusive: Q&A with author Peter Brandt

Author Peter L. Brandt To what do you attribute your long-term success as a trader?
The irony is that in real time, I never fully feel like I am trading successfully because I am always aiming for performance that is higher than I am attaining. I am generally my own worst critic and constantly set the bar higher than my last jump. The result is that it is difficult for me to crow about the “successes” of my trading career.

But, to the degree I have been consistently successful through the years, I believe it is due to three factors. First, I am obsessed with risk management. I spend more time and mental energy focusing on risk control protocols than on anything else. Managing losses and losing periods is my number one priority. If I can just tread water during the inevitable tough periods, sooner or later I will find myself caught in a favorable tide.

Second, my trading approach is overly simple by design. The result is that I know with as much certainty as is possible with a discretionary approach when there is a trade entry in my program. It does not mean that the trade will be profitable – only that the trade is there.

Third, I have tried to engage market speculation systematically, breaking down the process of trading into every conceivable component. What flows from this is an understanding of what components of trading are controllable and measurable and what components are uncontrollable. By the way, whether the next trade or series of trades will be profitable is not a controllable factor. Once a trader learns this -- it is then possible to remove ego from the equation.

Why do you think the majority of traders struggle?
It is not just the majority of traders who struggle – the reality is that ALL traders struggle, both professional traders and novice traders – but the struggles for each group are of a different variety. The struggles (perhaps the word “challenges” is a better description) of the professional trader are with minimizing asset volatility, handing the mental dimensions of drawdown periods and doing what he or she knows he must do to be successful (the upstream swim against human nature).

Novice traders struggle, at least for a couple of years, in the same way a dog struggles to catch its own tail – always chasing it, never catching it! The struggle comes from playing a game without knowing the rules.

More specifically, I think that most of the problems faced by novice traders originate from three sources. First, novice traders place a priority on finding winning trades rather than on managing losing trades. The difference between the two things is enormous. Novice traders bring to the markets an ego urge to be right on every trade. This often leads them on a never-ending search for a magic combination of technical indicators in order to be right 80% of the time.

Second, novice traders employ leverage that is dooming. Whereas professional traders seldom risk more than a few percent of capital on each trading event, novice traders may risk five, 10 or even 20 percent of trading capital on a trade.

Third, most novice traders have not determined exactly what a trading event is for them. If the practical definition and components of a trade are not clearly understood, then it is impossible to develop patience, discipline, trading processes, performance metrics and feedback loops. The exact process a trader employs can evolve and change over time, but there must be a definable starting point.

Unfortunately, the majority of novice traders run out of trading capital or hope before they figure out the rules of the game.

Why do you prefer pure price-based analysis versus technical indicators?
I need to give ample credit to those traders who successfully use technical indicators. I know and respect a number of traders who make heavy use of indicators.

But for me, I have no time for technical indicators for a number of reasons. Mainly, my problem is that technical indicators are nothing more than a derivative of price. When I can study price directly on a bar chart – and it is price that I must trade – then why would I want to study a derivative of price. For example, I trade gold – there is no market for trading the stochastic measures or relative strength index of gold.

Second, I am a minimalist. I want my trading plan to be a simple as possible. Indicators would have a way of complicating my trading plan.

Third – and not finally, because I could go on and on about this subject – reliance on technical indicators can be counter productive. For example, the most profitable bull markets are those that become and remain obscenely overbought. So, the traditional use of RSI and stochastics can predispose a trader to the wrong side of a massive price trend.

Again, I honor those traders who make money with technical indicators, but as a general rule I think the “indicator industry” is a sham.

Do you have strict rules for taking losses and profits?
Absolutely! Positively! Yes! Without Question! No doubt about it! At the time I enter a trade I know precisely what price (or set-up) will result in the trade being closed, for a profit or for a loss. To put a trade on without knowing these things is simply insane.

What advice would you give aspiring traders?
My initial advice would be to tell them to forget the idea. I would recommend against becoming a trader. Trading is hard work. I would suggest that they give their capital to a professional trader with a history of very small drawdowns.

But if they simply could not be dissuaded, then my advice would start with the following items:
1. It takes a minimum of two years to learn enough to put real skin into the game. Trade a simulated account in the meantime.
2. Don’t take specific trading advice from anyone under any circumstance.
3. Don’t take general advice on trading concepts or themes from anyone who cannot produce an actual track record of successful trading.
4. The overwhelming majority of books and seminars on trading are a deterrent to success trading.
5. No two successful traders trade the same way – and every successful trader has developed a style unique to his or her own personality, risk tolerance and skill sets.
6. The markets are a great teacher. Be prepared to confront character traits you didn’t know you had.
7. Your opponent to successful trading is not the markets nor other traders, but yourself.
8. Understand that there is no magic bullet – or holy grail. Successful trading is a result of hard work.
9. Have realistic expectations. Traders who think they can turn $10,000 into a million will likely fail. Most really successful traders average around 30% annually on proprietary funds.
10. If, after a year or two, you find that you are not enjoying the voyage, jump ship immediately.

From the Inside Flap

Becoming a consistently successful trader is a tough job. It's a craft that requires extensive knowledge of the markets—involving a whole lot more than just finding the next great trading opportunity—and a process that addresses many aspects of both the market's, and your own, behavior.

Nobody understands this better than author and longtime trader Peter Brandt. During his thirty-plus years in this field, he has made every mistake possible and learned some major lessons along the way. He also developed a set of guidelines, rules, and practices—which he refers to as the Factor Trading Plan—that direct his trading decisions.

Now, in Diary of a Professional Commodity Trader, Brandt shares the experiences he has gained trading price charts over the years, and through a real-time journal—which spans an arbitrary time frame of 21 weeks (from December 2009 to April 2010)—skillfully shows how he goes about the difficult endeavor of trading the commodity and forex markets using classical charting principles.

Divided into four comprehensive parts, this personal and unique guide clearly reveals the uncertainty and emotions that surround trading and details an effective approach towards speculation that will give you an edge. Page by page, it:

  • Offers a real-time, play-by-play account of Brandt's trading activities—the good, the bad, and the ugly—during his 21-week journey, and provides valuable insights into market analysis, trade identification and selection, and risk management

  • Highlights the basic building blocks of the author's Factor Trading Plan and examines how his plan continues to evolve with the markets

  • Emphasizes the central role risk management plays in market speculation—an even more important role than market analysis or trade selection

  • Reveals trading as a fundamental battle to overcome your basic human emotions

  • And much more

Unlike most books on this subject, which try to tell you how to trade, Diary of a Professional Commodity Trader offers a rare look at the realities of this discipline and provides you with a firm understanding of what it really takes to improve your performance over the long term.

Honesty, Clarity... and Price!
By Mercenary Trader
Full disclosure: This is not an unbiased perspective, as the reviewer has developed a warm friendship with the author (Peter Brandt).

With that said, hopefully you can overlook the bias for two reasons:

* Having read literally hundreds of trading books over the years - most of them mediocre, a small handful worth revisiting - your reviewer knows excellence when he sees it. By any standard, this book stands out.

* The author, Peter Brandt, has the ultimate in trader bona fides: An audited track record, spanning 30 years, of better than 41% compound returns! (No, that is not a typo.)

So with that out of the way, let's begin...

There is an old saying among professional racetrack handicappers: The losing player is the one who tells you he breaks even; the breakeven player is the one who tells you he is a consistent winner; and the winning player is the one who tells you it's a tough, tough game, with great dedication required for success.

Peter Brandt, a lifetime winner in the great game of trading, falls in the third category. While clearly someone who loves the game, he does not shy away from the hard realities of trading.

In describing his method of trading, Brandt comes across as refreshingly humble, underscoring that his approach is far from the only approach, cheerfully adding that other methodologies may be superior. (Though of course the vast majority of money managers would give a kidney, or maybe even a lung, for compound returns like his.)

From a position of humility, sincerity and strength, Brandt successfully explodes the following myths:

* The myth that inside information, hidden keys, or some other form of "secret knowledge" is what matters.

* The myth that percentage of winning trades is a meaningful measure of long-run trading success. (In fact the opposite may be true - an unhealthy focus on winning percentage can NEGATIVELY impact one's chances of success.)

* The myth that winning traders never experience setbacks, periods of trading frustration, or emotional challenges as "mere mortals" do.

Next to honesty, what shines forth from "Diary" is a stunning sense of clarity: Clarity of purpose, clarity of execution and methodology, and clarity of operational procedures from start to finish.

It is a beautiful thing to approach markets with a quiet confidence. Not every day will be a winning day, but every day can be infused with a sense of deep calmness, in respect to having a good plan and executing on that plan.

As a thirty-year veteran trader who understands the vital importance of comprehensive planning, Brandt exudes this desirable sense of calmness and, through the explanation of his methodology, teaches others how to cultivate it.

Just consider how many traders (perhaps you at one time?) have gotten lost in a fog of anxiety, or otherwise lost on the murky unmarked byways of an endless holy grail quest. Method after method, indicator after indicator... or consider how many traders agonize over the decision making process, never 100% clear what a "signal" is or whether the present signal is worth taking.

If you have uncomfortable familiarity with any of the above issues, this book could be a drink of cool water in the parched desert (or perhaps a bucket of refreshing ice water splashed in one's face). With sufficient methodological development and consistent planning, there is no need for ambiguity. As Brandt shows, a skilled trader can develop sufficient insight, conviction and rule-based engagement tools to know EXACTLY what a signal is, and exactly how to act on it.

And finally, last but not least, Brandt's book is a wonderful, powerful testament to price.

In earning his stellar compound returns over the course of three decades, Peter Brandt more or less did it via "price and price alone." The charts presented are beautifully unadorned, as is Brandt's methodology in general. There are no esoteric tea-leaf concoctions here - the regular hodge-podge of indicators that clutter up most charts are completely absent (and not at all missed). Hawkers of complicated bells and whistles should fear this book!

Brandt also does a service to traders in drawing attention back to classical chart patterns, in the context of the extended time frames required for full development of those patterns. Whereas "too fine an eye for pattern will find it anywhere," as the old saying goes, Brandt is very selective in the patterns he acts upon, preferring development time of weeks to months for the generation of true "best dressed" or "best in class" trades.

In conclusion: No matter your present depth of trading experience, this book could open your eyes. (If you can already "see," they may be opened a little wider.)

Anyone who seeks a path out of the dead-end labyrinth of esoteric guru methods, impossibly precise "can't lose" systems and convoluted trading predictions should read this book - as should those successful traders who already know and walk the path, yet simply seek to elevate their game.

How much would you pay?
By Daniel L. Chesler
How much would you pay for the opportunity to learn the finer points of speculation from a successful trader? Many books purport to offer access into the mind of successful traders. But most of these provide only anecdotal information. Outside of "Diary of a Professional Commodity Trader," I can think of no other book, or source, that offers the unvarnished, unhedged, nitty gritty details of speculation from a verifiably successful, veteran trader. Brandt has no axe to grind. He doesn't sell software, or indicators, or seminars. He doesn't appear on CNBC. He's not one of those smug "techncial gurus" out to prove his greatness. He's just a plain spoken, highly successful full time professional trader, willing to share with the public what he has learned over the past 30 years. I absolutely loved reading this book, and consider it a treasure, and a rare gift. My personal trading library contains over 500 titles; Brandt's book is already in my Top-10 list. So...how much would you pay to learn from Peter Brandt? If the $25 price tag of this book doesn't JUMP out at you as the STEAL of a lifetime, then you might want to reconsider whether trading is really for you.

A sincere, informative trading journal by a seasoned trader
By Edward Rooster
I enjoyed this book. I received it one friday afternoon, and I plowed through it that evening. I went through it again the next day. This is a journal of one trader, older and experienced, knowing that he didn't know everything, sharing what he did know as a trader discussing his trades over the course of a few months (December 2009 to May 2010).

I use trend following techniques, and while my approach is different, I could still appreciate that Mr. Brandt has offered nuggets of wisdom, generously shared, from a lifetime of hard-earned experiences. These are lessons from a passionate, humble and sincere individual, who presents himself simply as just another student of the markets.

While I'm not a chartist, lately I've looked at these squiggles on the screen and because I'm human, I began to "notice" lines or paths of least resistance, and I saw some of the same in this wonderful book. I also agree with the idea that traders have to not hesitate to take a signal, and not hesitate to take a loss on a predetermined basis, just a couple of spoilers from this book.

More importantly Brandt also talked about the need for each trader to prepare in advance answers for trading size, risk, attitude, and traits for success. What I really enjoyed was the post-mortem analysis of trading in 2010, which followed Brandt's trade by trade commentary. There are no holy grails, for every speculator there is definitely a need to focus on making dollars, while being willing to spend pennies in the form of losses, and not the other way around. This is at the heart of risk management in speculation. (The cliche of being pennywise versus poundfoolish is one that must be acknowledged as part of the human condition.)

The author stresses that he is not offering a secret formula to trading futures with the timeworn allure of easy riches, plastered all over the marketing copy of too many poorly conceived books. He instead offers more important and time-tested lessons. Some of you will be disappointed and disagree with me (that's what makes markets), but I believe those who read with patience, or with a little perspective earned the hard way, will understand the real point of this book.

One last thing about reading this book. As in trading and life, if you are patient, persistent and willing to put in the work and time and effort, you might be rewarded in surprising and delightful ways.
