The Maginot Line, the complex system of strongpoints constructed between the world wars by the French to protect against attack from Germany, is one of the most famous, extensive and controversial defensive schemes in all military history. An excellent guide

This is a fine history and guide to a legendary--and controversial--fortification system. Designed in the late 1920s and early 1930s, then built during the Depression (thus providing work, though at a massive overall cost), the largely underground border forts (ouvrage) faced both Germany and Italy. Behind their seeming impregnability the French military dozed, sadly convinced they merely had to occupy the gros (large) and petite (small) ouvrage to hold off any fascist invasion. Indeed, we speak of the "Maginot mentality" to this day to denote something providing false security.

All of this is discussed and assessed here, but the real appeal of this book is just how much detailed information is provided. I especially like the 3-D diagrams of the various Maginot ouvrage, as they offer a solid sense of each underground fort layout and its relationship to local terrain. I began with those ouvrage that I've seen in the south of France---and they bring back that visit of 15 years ago with their clarity. Furthermore, they make clear just how much variance there was in this massive construction project--all of it designed and built with nary a computer in sight.

The literature on Maginot's line is substantial---but much of it is quite understandably written in French. Works by Mary and Truttman, to name two of the best French authorities, are invaluable and offer excellent illustrations. But if you can't read the French captions and text, naturally much is lost. The Kaufmann's book provides a concise history as well as the all the context that anyone could need to visit the sites today (more of them are opening all the time). At the same time, it provides something of an English "key" to all those French volumes. I know that I will use both together from now on.

I strongly recommend this well-conceived and illustrated book. For the price, you will not find a better guide to and history of a fascinating fortification.

Excellent Introduction and Guide

This is an excellent introduction and guide to the Maginot Line. It concisely covers the purpose and history of the Maginot Line. It explains the technology and armament of the line. It is very well illustrated with maps, photos and drawings. There is an excellent section on what parts of the Maginot Line are open to the public today, and it includes contact and other information for the various sites.

Great read.

The book is an excellant modern study to the complete Maginot Line. Besides the main fortifications between France and Germany, it covers the minor fortifications between France and Beligum that were ultimately exploited by the Nazis and the fortifications between France and Italy, that were successful in stopping the Italion thrust into southern France. Also included are modern addresses and contacts for the fortifications that are open to the public.

About the Author

Carl W. Hafele is a money manager, professor of economics and finance, and an avid student of economic history. He became fascinated with the economic and personal consequences of financial crashes as a child, when he learned his absent grandfather "went down with the Crash" of 1929.

A former CEO and portfolio manager at National Asset Management and later INVESCO, Carl's three decades of financial experience include managing over $20 billion in assets. He teaches investment, business, and economic courses at Bellarmine University, has taught on the international level, and is currently a Financial Consultant at First Kentucky Trust Company.

A Chartered Financial Analyst and Certified Public Accountant, Carl received an MBA in finance from Xavier University. He coaches basketball and soccer, is a private pilot, and a member of numerous philanthropic organizations. Carl and his wife, Marianne, enjoy travel, exercise, and “having a blast” with their seven children.

essential, fabulous book on accent

If you're looking for a book on accents this has to be the first one to buy. It's clear, informative, systematic and gives you the guidelines and principles for doing ANY accent. It's also playful and very accessible and backs up the text with a cd. A bonus: the book is beautifully designed and illustrated, of high quality paper, and a pleasure to handle. Every actor, acting student and voice teacher should own this, read it, and refer to it as an essential reference book when working on roles.

Constantly Changing the Way I View Accent Work

I already owned Robert Blumenfeld's "Accents: A Manual for Actors" which did fantastic things for my accent work. It's a complete overview of just about any accent you could think of.

However, those guidelines require an actor to already understand healthy accent practices which is what this book covers remarkably. It is constantly changing the way I view accents. Their "You and the New" system is terribly simple, but also terribly vital. This book contains all the necessary foundations required for teaching yourself a new accent: recordings, diagrams, documents, etc. Buy the book. You won't be disappointed.

Got this for a young thespian

She is always involved in plays and acting - of all things she finds passion in, it is the theater. I got her this book and she told me it was her favorite gift, and an apple product was in that running. Two years later she still uses it, and in more than one performance I've heard a well practiced accent.

The gal I got this for was 11 at the time. Maybe 10? Anyhow, a younger individual and she just adores it.

The Acupuncture Handbook of Sports Injuries and Pain, is a well-illustrated, resourceful and easy-to-use handbook covering simple assessment techniques and treatment of 25 common musculoskeletal injuries. This is an extraordinary book. Whitfield, whom I have known for almost 25 years, has summed up his vast experience and technical innovation of treating soft tissue injury into a remarkably easy to use, step-by-step, handbook. His book addresses 25 common injuries and pain patterns affecting the following: the heel, foot, leg, knee, thigh, hip, lower back, hand, elbow, shoulder and neck. If we look at the nine-page chapter on Frozen Shoulder, we get an idea of Whitfield s organization. First, a one-page summation of Diagnosis and Assessment. Then, on a single page in outline form is Summary of the Injury, which includes Clinical Features, Common Patient Complaints, Differentiation from Similar Injuries and Conditions, and Typical Medical Recommendations. Following, in short outline form, is Treatment and Techniques, with an Overview and Prognosis. For each chapter, Whitfield then leads the practitioner through his four step protocol. For Frozen Shoulder, in Step One (Initial Treatment), he offers four techniques, including the tendino-muscle meridians, contra-lateral treatment, opposite extremity treatment, and empirical points. The practitioner may choose from any and all of these techniques. Included are special needle techniques and comments for each of his recommendations. Step Two offers treatments based on meridians and microsystems, such as shu-stream point combinations, xi-cleft, extraordinary meridians, and auricular therapy. This includes rationalization and degree of predicable success. Step Three addresses possible underlying zang-fu imbalances and their need for treatment. Step Four offers detailed examination of important local and ah shi points relevant to the injury. Anyone who has studied with Whitfield, or has been his patient, observes several things. Foremost, his treatments are remarkably effective. He often tells patients that he expects recovery within three treatments. Secondly, Whit's genius is his knowledge of local and distal palpatory points that are critical to success; few books reveal these points or Whitfield s unique needle technique. Third, his knowledge of local anatomy allows for point combinations that take into account local innervation, origin and insertion of muscles, and the relationship of ligaments and tendons to the injury. About the Author
Whitfield Reaves, OMD, L.Ac. is a nationally certified acupuncturist, and has been in the forefront of sports medicine acupuncture since 1981. His clinical experience includes medical care for athletes at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, as well as numerous triathlons, skiing, running, and cycling events during the last 25 years. Whitfield s work integrates traditional Chinese acupuncture with western orthopedic and sports medicine. The Acupuncture Handbook of Sports Injuries and Pain is the compilation of over 25 years of clinical experience treating competitive athletes, sports injuries, and pain. Whitfield is actively involved in the profession, and has been teaching for over 20 years. He is currently an instructor at Southwest Acupuncture College, in Boulder, CO. In addition, he lectures in the U.S., Canada, and Europe on sports medicine acupuncture. Chad Bong, MS, L.Ac. is a nationally certified acupuncturist and holds a Master's degree in Exercise Science. Well organized, indepth coverage for the specific injuries it addresses.

I am finding this book serves its nitch very well -- addressing the 25 most common sports injuries. There are obviously missing topics - particularly those related to trauma which can be more random in location than acute or chronic overuse. However, this one is going to be a major resource for me. Now it is likely consulted ahead of others I've currently been using.

I found the sections on hamstring/posterior thigh pain, plantar fascitis, frozen shoulder, and carpal tunnel syndrome to be very well done. Each was helpful and pretty representative of the how these disorders were consistently covered for the following subtopics.

1. DIAGNOSIS AND ASSESSMENT (often 1-2 pages of core information along with noting when a problem is serious enough to need orthopedic referral). These are written in a conversational manner. Along with critical facts, they also give a nice glimpse of the author's humanness in the face of problems and responses with which clients may present.

2. SUMMARY OF THE INJURY -- summarizes what one may see clinically, typical patient compliants, key discriminations from related injuries, and summary of typical medical/physical therapy approaches.

3. TREATMENT TECHIQUES - including estimate of how many treatments and how long might be predicted. This section is very logically ordered into 4 steps which are:
.. a. Initial treatments: Tendino-muscular, contralateral, ipsilateral or opposite extremity points, empirical points (which may be extra meridian points, Dr. Tung's or other similar ideas if known),
.. b. Merdian and Microsystems: including the shu-stream points, important points of the meridians represented in the injury, He-Sea/Hui-Influential points and extraordinary meridian points if relevant. Microsystem coverage usually includes potentially useful auriculotherapy points. Sometimes wrist-ankle or other systems are also added.
.. c. Points to treat associated inernal organ imbalances if relevant for Qi, Blood and Zang-fu.
.. d. Suitable local and adjacent points most relevant to the site of injury. These can be particularly useful for focusing tendino-muscular or meridian treatments.

4. COMPLIMENTARY PROCEDURES. Finally a listing of possible supplementary procedures such as temperature manipulation, linaments, heel lifts, self-massage, splints, etc.

A good amount of detail is given regarding depth of needling, moxa applications, relevant trigger and motor points (along with the reference information in Travell and Simons). Unfortunately some of these references are to websites that may have unknown durability. There are selected muscle/bone drawings for each injury which include the essential anatomy and points -- well drawn and focused.

For future editions I would like to see this handbook incorporate the points as they relate to relevant nerve conduction pathways (such as in Dr. Joseph Wong's Neuroanatomical Acupuncture), as this is a more comprehensively structured and consistently ordered handbook than those in which I've previously seen the neuroanatomical information.

While I also like Sports Acupuncture The Meridian Test and Its Applications -- unless one makes sports injuries the focus of their practice, Reaves book seems more immediately accessible and implementable on a busy day.

A MUST have resource

Whether you are a seasoned acupuncturist or a student, this book is a must have. Don't be fooled by the title "Sports Injuries & Pain". While it is an excellent resource for Sports injury - this is an invaluable practitioner tool for ANY patient who needs treatment for injury, pain, and musculoskeletal dysfunction. This book is well written, illustrated and organized in a manner for easy access to treatment principles. No need to scan through pages and pages of text to find what you need. As a TCM student I use it in the clinic consistently because the layout of the book gives me what I need quickly and precisely. I agree with the others who have commented; with all of Dr. Reaves knowledge and experience we will look forward to more!

A GREAT Reference

I highly recommend this book for the treatment of pain & sports injuries. I've been in practice since 2007 and mostly see patients with pain and muscle dysfunction. I use orthopedic and balance method style acupuncture and was very pleased with Dr. Reaves's book in that it organizes treatment protocols in Four Steps taking into consideration the tendo-muscular channels, mirroring, channel theory as well as local orthopedic needling. Dr. Reaves's Four Steps approach to treatment is not a rigid system but merely a guide. As a practitioner one could use the Four Steps in a progressive manner applying the first steps to acute pain and the last steps for chronic pain. In the introduction, Dr. Reaves explains how and when to use what steps. If you are not getting the results you want with the treatment of pain this is a must have book! The Acupuncture Handbook of Sports Injuries & Pain provides clear, concise and time tested clinical results in an easy to use guide for any practitioner of Chinese medicine.

Cardiovascular disease is still the chief cause of death in our society. It is therefore not surprising that the field of cardiovascular science continues to expand rapidly, particularly at the cellular and subcellular levels. This expansion can cause difficulties for clinicians and medical students. Yet an understanding of the "new" physiology is essential for the proper use of new forms of medical technology and pharmacologic agents. It is in this context that Lionel Opie's opus expertly integrates cellular and subcellular elements of cardiovascular physiology in an analysis of physiologic responses.

The book starts with an overview of the cardiovascular system, including descriptions of electrophysiologic principles, excitation-contraction coupling, and mechanisms of receptor and signal transduction. The discussion of these mechanisms then leads to a review of cardiac function and finally, to an integrative analysis of the circulation and pathologic conditions that affect it. A particularly strong feature of this book is that the discussion always goes back to cellular and subcellular mechanisms, maintaining the connection between cellular physiology and overall integrative physiology.

An omission from this otherwise comprehensive book is a discussion of molecular mechanisms. There is nothing on transcriptional and translational regulation of enzyme systems and receptors, nor is there much information about new experimental models, including transgenic animals. Perhaps the next edition will rectify this oversight.

This book is well written. Each chapter has numerous figures, a large proportion of which were prepared especially for this new edition. There are also many summary tables. A minor criticism is that the abundant figures, some of which are redundant, can cause confusion by illustrating the same point in different ways.

Dr. Opie has given this book a very nice scholarly touch by placing a quote at the beginning of some chapters and by including historical notes throughout the text. Each extensively referenced chapter allows the reader to look up the primary sources and learn about any of the subjects in more detail.

The book has been designed to work as a textbook. Each chapter ends with a summary of the major points and sets of questions for students and cardiologists in training. This makes the book ideal not only for students and trainees but also for cardiologists who want to review cardiovascular physiology and the principles underlying new therapeutic agents.

How does this book relate to the book by Arnold Katz with a similar name, Physiology of the Heart (Second edition. New York: Raven Press, 1992)? Opie deals with this in his preface. He says that his book should be viewed as a companion to and not a competitor of Katz's book and other cardiology textbooks. I completely agree. Opie's book provides information on pharmacology and integrative physiology that complements information on mechanisms related to contraction and energetics discussed in Katz's book. But other cardiovascular textbooks contain more clinical and therapeutic information.

The one fault I find with this book is the lack of appreciation of the integration of the heart with the venous circuit and of the effect of this integration on cardiac function. For example, in the section on cardiac output and exercise, the author states, "During dynamic exercise, it is the increased heart rate that provides most of the adaptation. In addition, there is an increased venous return, which acts by the Frank-Starling mechanism." Since cardiac output must equal venous return in the steady state, any increase in cardiac output must equal the increase in venous return. There is no additional increase in venous return. The failure to recognize this point leads to a number of weaknesses in the integrative sections and sometimes to a failure to appreciate which cardiac variables are independent and which are dependent. However, this point does not detract from the overall usefulness of this very fine book.

Heart Physiology

We just completed using this text in a study group setting. I have about 25 years of cardiovascular pathophysiology background but had never read through this book in detail so I looked forward to reading it. Unfortunately, I was very disappointed. Physiology, especially cardiovascular physiology, is a logical discipline. Heart Physiology, however, is not written in a logical fashion in many places, especially in the organ physiology and pathophysiology sections. In fact, in places the presentation borders on being incoherent. Material is repeated and sometimes this information is contradictory. Some material in the pathophysiology sections is just plain wrong and in others is misleading. Needless to say I am currently searching for a replacement for next year's group.

Perfect for the young cardiac physiologist

This book is perfect for the young cardiac physiologist. My interests are concentrated on the metabolism of the heart and while the Author has spent many years of research on glucose metabolism this book gives an excellent broad based understanding on heart physiology. It is considered the "bible" in the lab I work in. Well recommended to undergraduate as well as postgraduate students looking for clear explanations on different concepts and theories regarding the heart.

Wadell skillfully moves back and forth from ancient and medieval texts to contemporary insight on the nature of persons and society. In this book he addresses clearly the fundamentals of moral theology in a thoroughly 'un-textbook' fashion. Paul J. Wadell is a professor of religious studies at St. Norbert College. He specializes in Christian ethics and has taught in this field for twenty years. He has written several books on Christian ethics, including Becoming Friends: Worship, Justice, and the Practice of Christian Friendship and The Moral of the Story: Learning From Literature about Human and Divine Love.

great basic introduction to virtue ethics

Dr. Wadell's book is a terrific introduction to the positive, life affirming topic of Christian virtue ethics. Read this book if you really want to know how even despite sin and human weakness, God's love for us all transends the sorrows of the world. His explanations are beautifully crafted and his voice is one that brings hope to those who struggle with living the good life well. Wonderful text for beginning students of a positive, affirming view of Christian ethics. A breath of fresh air in the dankness of the usual sin, damnation, and "thou-shall-nots" of many Christian ethics texts. Bravo, Dr. Wadell, your book is full of joy!

Received on time and in the condition it was described. Used, but still in good condition with very minimal highlighting on less than 5 pages of entire book. I am happy with the order.
