the Golden Book of camping and camp crafts

The book that i recieved was in excellent shape ! i already had a copy of this book but it was missing the last page and back cover. I wanted a complete book looked it up on Amazon.com and found some for sale put in a price and 2 days later there was a confirmation for a sale. suprised the heck out of me. I can and have sat down with my grandson and we went through the book and tied some knots and are hoping that come next spring we can use it to do some camping. thanks

Terrific Book For Kids - Great Nostalgia Piece For Adults

Oh yeah - talk about a time capsule of simpler, more innocent days. This wonderful book made its way into my possession when I was a just a young boy in the very early 60's. I was fascinated with it from the moment I first picked it up. After all, what boy doesn't like camping? I remember spending hours at a time reading it, learning knots, making lists, gathering up camping gear, thinking, planning, and dreaming about going on camping trips. I grew up in the Florida Keys, so the concept of camping down there was considerably different than it was in other areas of the country. Never much in the way of hiking involved. What we did was basically island camping, arriving at our destination by boat or canoe, and spending several days swatting mosquitoes and avoiding severe sunburn. We always had to take plenty of fresh drinking water with us, as there was not any available on any of the islands. So yes, the whole concept of camping as it was presented in this book took a considerable amount of adapting to fit our special circumstances. But that never interfered with or diminished my enjoyment of this book one iota. It was still an indispensable resource to a young boy enamored with the whole idea of camping. I read and re-read this book again and again, probably spending many more hours with it than I did on actual camping trips. Then at some point, when I was considerably older, the book disappeared, and I didn't think much about it again for a good many years.

Then a year or two ago, I was able to get my hands on a nice copy of the 1959 edition. What a delightful blast from the past! I had forgotten how beautifully illustrated the book was, with full-color artwork throughout. All of the kids in the illustrations looked so neat and clean-cut, right out of Leave It to Beaver - just the way we looked in the late 50's and early 60's! Every page I turned brought back wonderful memories of all the hours I spent turning those same pages 50 years earlier. I suppose by today's standards, The Golden Book of Camping and Camp Crafts would be no more than a curiosity piece. I don't have any kids or grandkids of my own that I can share it with. If I did, most likely, they would laugh at its corny drawings and goody two-shoes approach to the whole subject. But I can attest to the powerful attraction it had for me as a young boy. And while the actual camping trips it helped spawn were most likely quite limited in number and duration, I know my youthful days were greatly enriched by the world it allowed me to enter whenever I opened its pages. And the great thing is, now I can go back there again - anytime I like!

It's probably been 30 years now since I've been camping. Who knows? Someday soon, with the help of this marvelous book, I may start planning out yet another trek into the "wild". Or if not, I at least can once again dream about it. Just like 50 years ago, the dreaming and the planning can be as just much fun as the actual trip - and with a lot fewer mosquitoes...

An Enigma Wrapped Up In A Letter

Although not quite unique, Thomas Pynchon's approach to narration is extremely unusual. Often he seems to drone on in endless detail. At times his books read like a description of a vaudeville slapstick routine. Commonly, narrative structure, presumably at the heart of most novels, seems abandoned, or even purposely ignored. The upshot of this is that Thomas Pynchon's novels are strange, and decidedly not for everyone.
Of course the flip side is that for those who find Pynchon to their liking he is a rare treat, an intriguing enigma that you simply cannot stop talking about. Such is the case with V., a novel that over the years has shown a propensity to spark almost endless debate. Ostensibly it is the story of two men, Stencil and Benny Profane. Benny spends the greater part of the novel tramping around New York City with his friends, the Whole Sick Crew, generally not doing much of anything except procrastinating and running through various jobs and friends. Stencil spends most of the novel a quest of sorts, using a unique technique to track down details about an elusive and mysterious woman known only as V.
It has been noted that it is a technique of Pynchon's to surround the reader in layer after layer of detail and leave her to ferret out some sense; V. is certainly in keeping with that tradition. Wrapped up in this book is enough social critique, pop culture, historical theory, hilarious humor, and prediction of the future to make the reader's head spin like the roulette wheel at a casino. Rather than a shortcoming, this overwhelming downpour of data is one of the best parts of V., as there is just enough cohesion among the disparate elements that certain associations, even theories, can be developed. But are the associations really there or just in the reader's head? That is one of the questions Pynchon aches to ask.
Also central to V. is the idea of mechanization and routinization. Several characters in V. (including V herself) become more and more mechanized as time passes. Further, several elements of V. suggest the mechanization of society. Linked to this idea of mechanization is that of routinization, and Pynchon seems to say that the mechanization of modern life has helped create a society that is locked in routine. This theme of routinazation is found in both large and small instances. On the small side is Benny Profane (among others) who is continually unable to break out of the boundaries he has set on his life. ...
I feel my review of V. would not be complete without a few words about Pynchon's amazing breadth of knowledge. Diverse places such as New York City, Malta, Paris, and Africa are made the setting for several of the book's scenes and these locations are discussed with such authority, knowledge, and familiarity that the reader is convinced that Pynchon must have spent five years living in each. Additionally Pynchon integrates a great deal of information into the plot of V. A sampling of such information would include: explicit procedures for a nosejob, World War I fighter pilots, naval vessels, jazz musicians, Machiavelli, modern art, classical art, automobile safety tests, and the Holy Bible. Even at the tender age of 24 Pynchon had filled his head with enough information to inscribe nearly each of the 500 pages of V. with a certain subtext or reference.
Rather than review V. by presenting a plot summary I have tried to express a few of the ideas Pynchon works with. I have done this because V. thrives on non-linearity and a plot summary would be pointless and would do little to give a potential reader a true feel for what V. might be like. Instead I have chosen a few elements that I feel are at the heart of V., and have discussed them. For those who enjoy immersing themselves in a book and look forward to thorough discussions when they are done there are few books I can recommend above V. But for those who prefer more traditional, even formulaic, books I should warn that V., while in my opinion excellent, may not be to their liking. Despite these admonitions I would recommend this book to as many people as possible, as I do believe that everyone should experience V. This fine book may be a difficult taste to acquire, but one well worth the effort.

Terrible Typos

I give this book four stars because it challenges the reader and is psychedelic as hell. I deduct two stars for persistent and annoying typographical errors that occur very often.

Examples:
Page 340, Second Paragraph: "I write this during a night raid, down in the abandoned sewer. It is raining outside. The only fight is from phosphorus flares above the city, a few candles in here, bombs, Elena is beside me, holding the child who sleeps drooling against her shoulder."

Page 341 Third Paragraph: "First mention oaf Elena Xemxi comes from Fausto I, shortly after Maratt's marriage."

The first example is obvious that "The only fight" should be "The only light". The second is also glaringly stupid, "oaf" should be "of".

I hope the oaf who proofread this novel is fired forsooth!

As a poor schlemiel seeking meaning in the mysteries of the human experience, I read V after having felt that my senses had been affected by the experience of reading Gravity's Rainbow. In an era where people strive to be as "holistic" as possible in their interpretation of life's events, V at the very least offers a symbolic representation of a gradual narrowing of focus that accompanies any investigation. One coul d argue that this process lies at the core of our very "understanding" of anything. Recall that this novel was written by a young author, possibly trying to impress as young men do, that which is important to us. That to which we devote great time and effort in pursuit of. The fertile delta? A shady grove, my darling? I would be delighted to read a comparable work from the sensibility of a female's point of view. May I be so bold as to suggest a title? It would be "I", possibly subtitled "Wire We Hear", with abundant allusions to stringed musical instruments and other phallable symbolism.

It's well designed and gives a beginner a second course in fingering, keys, notes, etc. I would recommend this book as well a Alto Sax level one as a beginning course for anyone wanting to learn to play the Alto Sax. I WAS PRETTY WELL VERSED ON THE CLARINET SINCE I HAD BEEN PLAYING THE CLARINET AND BASS CLARINET SINCE CHILDHOOD. I ALWAYS WANTED A SAXOPHONE SO I GOT MYSELF ONE FOR CHIRSTMAS. I ALSO PURCHASED THE BOOK ONE OF PLAY ALTO SAXOPHONE TODAY WHEN I BOUGHT THE SAXOPHONE. I WENT THROUGH BOOK ONE AND FIGURED I NEEDED BOOK TWO ALSO SO I PURCHASED IT. I AM NOT IN THE LEAST BIT SORRY I PURCHASED THESE TWO VERY GOOD LESSON PLANS FOR THE SAXOPHONE. IF THEY HAVE A BOOK THREE I WILL GET IT ALSO. VERY GOOD WAY TO LEARN THE SAXOPHONE.

Harvey "Smokey" Daniels has been a city and suburban classroom teacher and a college professor, and now works as a national consultant and author on literacy education. Sara Ahmed has taught in urban, suburban, public, independent, and international schools. Built to Last became an instant business classic. This audio abridgement is read by the authors, who alternate chapters. Collins is a bit breathlessly enthusiastic, but clear and interesting; Porras, unfortunately, is poorly inflected and wooden. They set out to determine what's special about "visionary" companies--the Disneys, Wal-Marts, and Mercks, companies at the very top of their game that have demonstrated longevity and great brand image. The authors compare 18 "visionary" picks to a control group of "successful-but-second-rank" companies. Thus Disney is compared to Columbia Pictures, Ford to GM, and so on.

A central myth, according to the authors, is that visionary companies start with a great product and are pushed into the future by charismatic leaders. Usually false, Collins and Porras find. Much more important, and a much more telling line of demarcation between a wild success like 3M and an also-ran like Norton, is flexibility. 3M had no master plan, little structure, and no prima donnas. What makes a visionary company? This book, written by a team from Stanford's Graduate School of Business, compares what the authors have identified as "visionary" companies with selected companies in the same industry. The authors juxtapose Disney and Columbia Pictures, Ford and General Motors, Motorola and Zenith, and Hewlett-Packard and Texas Instruments, to name a few. The visionary companies, the authors found out, had a number of common characteristics; for instance, almost all had some type of core ideology that guided the company in times of upheaval and served as a constant bench mark. Not all the visionary companies were founded by visionary leaders, however. On the whole, this is an intriguing book that occasionally provides rare and interesting glimpses into the inner workings and philosophical foundations of successful businesses. The authors' findings confirm a few management theories but contest many others. More important, they demonstrate the hows of good management in detail, with readable case histories (IBM, Merck, Motorola, Walt Disney, among others) and studies of contrasting corporations, and they include guidelines for those striving for long-lasting success. [book:Built to Last: Successful Habits of Visionary Companies|4122] was one of the first business books I've ever read. At the time, as an aspiring entrepreneur, James C. Collins spoke volume to me and how I should structure an everlasting company. Written by two Stanford University's Graduate School of Business professors, the level of knowledge and experience they jointly possess will exceed your expectations. The main point of the book is to either identify your business as a "clock builder" or a "time teller." Time tellers focus on being the loudest and most disruptive companies, while clock builders are more reserved and focus on growth and preserving their core values for centuries into the future. As a well researched book might indicate, the authors provide a tremendous amount of detail on what makes companies such as Coca-Cola, Citi Bank, Wal-Mart, Walt Disney, Nordstrom, stand the test of time. These companies have been active in our lives for generations and they reveal exactly how they have endured, and how they will continue to endure for many generations to come. Whether you are an entrepreneur, owner, middle management or a salesmen, this book will undoubtably inspire you to reach great heights.

A Must Read for the CEO

Anyone tasked with the daunting responsibility of running an organization is faced with the challenge of culture. In the event that you are the "lucky" successor to a founder or a turn-around situation (my professional scenarios all have been in this realm), the task of what to do, where to go, and how to get there are huge - the culture is either well established, failing, and needs to change, or the culture may have been one of personality, facing a vacuum, and needs to be institutionalized. Collins and Porras look at a series of companies that have transcended this challenge and have developed a visionary culture that withstands the test of time.

Summarizing the basic themes:

* Be an architect and clock builder and design and develop a vision that stand the test of time
* Embrace the "Genius of AND." - do not accept difficult trade-offs and strive for the near impossible
* Preserve the core/stimulate progress - Develop, hone and ruthlessly protect core values, and innovate around that core
* Seek consistent alignment - Align all stakeholders to the vision of the organization and continue to insure alignment

Unlike some of the challenges faced by the companies chosen by Tom Peters in "In Search of Excellence", a 25 year run on Collins book finds many of his study subjects still in the forefront of their industries. Collins is definitely onto something, and is one of the more engaging writers of the genre. Definitely worth the read.

It is not a how-to book. It is not suggesting receipes for your own case to succeed. Rather it is explaining what visinoary companies did different than control group companies (still remarkably successfull compared to sectoral averages). You need to extract your lessons which suits to your spesific case.
I believe that this a good approach. It acknowledges that your case is unique. It also recognizes yourself as capable and willing to progress, hence inspires you about possible vision. In case you need to be convinced you could follow cases or quotations from the research.
This is another good feature because you have the chance to skip sections that %100 agree with author. It makes you fast to read whole book.
I like the coinciding ideas of visionary companies and TOC literature. You could find marks of Blue Ocean Strategies as well in the book.
I feel energized and motivated to feel "do something, now, I can, no need tobe CEO!"

Underwhelmed

I had been looking forward to this book for months, in the hopes that I would get atleast some new hidden info, more about Team Avatar's lives outside of the show and great artwork. It glazes over the whole series, gives details into each nation (some of which would be better off in a farmer's almanac. Seriously, I preordered a book to learn which nation has more babies in winter? Seriously?), and there are some new images, but a lot of clip art/cell grabs inclusions, including one of season 1 Zuko...The writing is mostly line for line or minorly changed from the show. There is a poster included, which has varying degrees of image quality, with some animals obviously just being grabbed from the show and others being faux sumi inked. Pay an artist to finish out the loose ink style, jeez. Some of the souvenir keepsakes were glued on the wrong side, so I couldn't read the back of the postcards.
Overall, I think a kid would enjoy it, but buyer beware. Good construction, well printed.
If you are an adult fan wanting to hear something cool and new now that we're in a post ATLA and LOK world, avoid unless you just want to collect it for collecting sake. It's 99.9% stuff you already know, with the .1% being drivel.
Otherwise wait for everyone to ditch theirs for a couple of bucks.

This Was Not What I Was Hoping For

Since June, I have been waiting on pins and needles for this book. I was so excited, thinking that we would finally get the chance to read about Aang and the Avatar team after the series - spanning from the last episode and leading up to his death. Honestly, all I really wanted was to see images from Aang and Katara’s wedding. Instead, I got another, but poor, rehashing of the Avatar series.

‘The Legacy’ was actually Aang’s diary for Tenzin. Aang wanted Tenzin to know his history, about the Airbenders and basically recalling the events leading up to the defeat of the Fire Lord. Katara, Toph and Sokka had 2 pages to add their 2 cents. The book was divided up by the four nations. Aang goes a little deeper into each nation and gives a few interesting facts, like population, bending, seasons of the most births and philosophy. There are random postcards, small posters, and a comic. There aren’t a lot of these and seem forced to make it diary-like. It was an easy, quick read. The font might be a little small.

The book is beautifully made. The cover is gorgeous. The pages are good quality. The images are sharp and clean. But the book is incredibly short, despite the price. And my main pet peeve was the artwork. I guessed I got used to the high quality from the other books that I own. I don’t know if it was intentional, but the art work was not good and there was a mix of old and new artwork. It was too much a clash that it was distracting. I don't know if it was because they used a different publisher or what, but it saddened me after seeing such an awesome cover.

If you are like me, who collects all the comics and artbooks, it didn’t really bring anything new. Considering the price, the length and the content is definitely not worth it. I would’ve waited if I had known. This is an absolute miss for me. However, if you are coming late into the series or just seen only Korra, this will be a good way to get a quick recap of ATLA. Depending on what you already own, you might get a different reaction than me. In the end, I was disappointed.

Spectacular

You know, after reading the comments before reading this book, I thought it would not be good.. but that is SO NOT TRUE. Yes, it tells you what you know about the show, BUT Aang tell us more interesting information. He told Tenzin about his favorite memories he had with Katara and he explains his homeland in depth (as well as the fire, water, and earth homelands). What people are not mentioning in the comments below is that this book also has letters written by Toph, Sokka, and Katara for Tenzin. It is not just Aang who is writing to Tenzin. The book is a total charm. The only thing that made me upset was that Zuko did not write to Tenzin, but it's understandable. He is the Fire Lord. He's a busy guy. Not to mention, many of Aang's letters are just so sweet and nice. He mentons Monk Gyatso, Team Avatar, and many other very important people in such kind ways. This is a book for all devoted Avatar fans... I promise
