Thought provoking and enjoyable

The book starts with the history of zero and ends with some of the complex physics that came to be because of the number 0. Part philosophical but all math, I couldn't wait to get to the next page because of all the drama that is 0. For those not so mathematically inclined, the first half of the book will be nice history with philosophers and scientists that we all learned about in school from the perspective of zero. It explains well how math was created and how the classes we took in school came to be. The second half demonstrates how zero has been used to explain the laws of physics.

Nothing... Something to get excited about

I'll admit, writing a book about nothing and making it exciting is probably a challenging thing to do. This is going to be a rather odd thing to bring up at the start of the review, but I have to ask did people read a different book than I did? Seriously, I read through just about every negative review and the points made against the book are barely in the book I read. If anything, they focus in on a minor detail, interpret it wrong, and then give the book a one star. I digress, let me get to the review and then I may go over some points to refute.

This book focuses on the history of Zero for the most part. In there it touches upon historical moments in mathematics and later in physics as it gets to the modern scientific era. I personally found the research on the early history quite on point and very fun to read (there's a lengthy bibliography at the end if you feel the need to see his words backed up). The sensational writing didn't bother me at all, because I realize the relationship between the title and the style. Seife is trying to make nothing exciting! If you didn't get that point or got annoyed with that style then you missed out on a really fun read. The author tried to include fairly random historical anecdotes about the people discussed to lighten the mood in the book. I thought these were fun additions and interesting to read as well.

Overall the book is written in decently easy to understand language. I have a fairly decent mathematical background and I didn't feel I really needed to know everything to read the first half of the book. However, when Seife starts delving into concepts like Calculus and Set Theory I think knowing how to do calculus was definitely a help in understanding this section. If you're more of a lay reader and more interested in the history than the math then this book really might be a bad choice. The first part is absolutely fascinating, but it does get confusing towards the end, especially when he starts delving into Quantum Theory and Particle Physics.

One aspect on the section of early history that I found particularly fascinating was the relation of zero to philosophy. The ancients were heavily influenced by beliefs and philosophy so it's not much of a stretch to think this influence stretched beyond just those subjects and into math and science. So when Pythagoras and Aristotle reject notions of the void philosophically it's reasonable to assume they would find such notions nonsense mathematically. For a long time, and still today, Math is merely a representation of the world we see and observe. They didn't observe voids or vacuum's during Aristotle's time so naturally they wouldn't exactly latch onto it as a real possibility. One thing that really fascinated me was the possible hindrance philosophy and belief (or religion) had in holding back mankind's ability to progress mathematically. The main reason that zero didn't make it into the western world probably had more to do with the stranglehold the Romans put on the people than with their unwilling to believe in the void or infinity, which is also why it was trade that finally used zero. However, there were intellectuals alive and breathing during the Dark Ages and a lot of their hindrance to accept concepts like zero was philosophical. The Church had adopted Aristotle's model of the universe and it was blatantly wrong. (This book does not say Aristotle is at fault for holding back people philosophically, it merely says his view/model, that the Earth is the center of the universe, is wrong. Which it is.) However, the rising power of the Catholic Church adopted his explanation and said it was a fact and back then their word was law. Once mathematics and science came across discrepancies in that proof then Church asserted its power and only tried to tighten its grip on those communities until people revolted against it. I'm not saying zero is the reason we got out of the Dark Ages, but it didn't hurt us any! It probably helped us a lot more in the long run. My point in bringing this up is that things like belief and philosophy can hinder progress in fields like the sciences. (These are not beliefs, as in making assumptions about testable criteria by the way.) It seems to make more sense, that if you must derive some divine notion, you would interpret the data, not try to fit the data into a preconceived belief. Thus belief would interpret the math and math would not interpret the belief. The ancients had this backwards for a long time, which I think that's a major factor and this book touches upon that.

As I mentioned above the book can change gears into something very complicated. I think this is kind of the downfall of this book for some people because the confusing explanations at the end leave them on a low note. As the book progressed and got beyond my mathematical understanding I found the explanations a lot more confusing. When it finally got out of the confusing areas I think it picked up again during the sections on the expansion of the universe. I enjoyed the parts of Zero Point energy, but I'm not entirely sure it's written in a fashion that is easily understood. Seife makes comments in a very historical manner and I think that really confuses people at times. Such as one reviewer complained that the books information is outdated on Vacuums and concepts like limitless energy. However, this book does touch on that subject during its discussion of Zero Point energy, maybe it was merely presented in a way that confused readers? I'm not entirely sure; I didn't personally feel confused until he started talking about Set Theory, which I clearly need to brush up on.

In the end I simply loved this book. I tore through it in a mere three days and I'm a pretty slow reader. I personally didn't mind the sensationalizing of zero to fairly emphatic levels. This is a book about nothing after all and you might as well make it sound really exciting! Maybe there should've been more exclamation points so we can see how impressive the author's thoughts really are! Anyway I had fun with this book, but I wouldn't recommend it to people that haven't made it beyond calculus or else the second half might get a little confusing. Previously understanding Einstein's work would be a bonus to getting through this book as well. Other than that the first half is absolutely fascinating and I feel I walked away with more knowledge than I went in even if the book repeated a lot of things I already knew.

1000 years lost to superstition

Who new zero could be so feared by Western Civilization? We musn't let new ideas scare us away from exploration. No one...not government...not church...not education has that right. With zero forbidden by these three bastions of civilization, we lost 1000 years of knowledge.
"Zero: The Biography of a Dangerous Idea" by Charles Seife is a wonderful trip through the development and evolution of zero and infinity; sometimes quirky, sometimes humorous, but always a little sad that knowledge was forbidden.
You don't have to be a math genius to read it...only curious.

Not what I had expected.

I bought this book thinking this would be Jack Ma's success story of how he built this great company and massive wealth. Instead this is a compilation of every comment made by Jack on record. While everything he says make sense it is not quite the biographical story i was looking for. most of the speeches are available on youtube anyways.

These writers really know Texas - I live in Houston, but I travel all over the state (I use these books to get day trip ideas) and they really nail pretty much every aspect of the Lone Star State: the best places for barbecue, the essential sights, the culture... like most Lonely Planet guides, the coverage of off-the-beaten-path destinations and outdoor activities is top-notch, which I love (although Frommer's has a more nuanced rating system and Fodor's has the prettiest layouts... but that's a discussion for another day).

In short, this is overall the best Texas guide I've read. My only hang-up is the writing in certain chapters (the Gulf Coast, in particular) is pretty dry, although the rest of the chapters are quite engaging. The quality of information throughout, however, is impeccable.

(P.S. - To the reviewer mentioning the "gross" food recommendations in Lockhart - I strongly disagree with you, as does apparently Texas Monthly and the long lines of people waiting out the door.)

I wished there were more substantial separate guides for each of the major Texas cities

Honestly, each of the sections in this book should probably have it's own book, Dallas, San Antonio, Houston, Austin, etc. I just spent 9 days in Houston and got this book, in addition to several other relevant tour guides. In the end, I stopped using the other guides and consulted just with LP. In general, LP writers have a better feel for what is important, what is fun, and what is interesting. Houston is the fourth most populated city in the USA and growing. There's lots to do and while the 40 or so pages devoted to Houston were good, the best among the sources I had, I wished there was more. A problem in writing a Hoston tour guide is that it is growing and changing so quickly. Galveston is also interesting and the section on Galveston (just an hour away from Houston), should have been much, much bigger, too.
addendum (3/12/16): Just came back from 9 days in San Antonio and the Hill Country. I found these sections of this book just as good, and after buying and trying to use the other guides, I found this one the best

If you have never heard of the Nashville number system, this book is for you!

If you are new to music theory and have not heard of the Nashville number system, this book is for you! Becky Shaw does a great job explaining how to read chord charts and transpose keys in minutes. If you have some knowledge of these concepts already, this book might not get provide a tremendous amount of new information. Still, there are take-aways from this book no matter your level of experience. Definitely a good read!

French Drawings in the British Museum

"French Drawings: Clouet to Seurat" is a softbound catalogue of some of the French Drawings from the British Museum. The Introduction, written by Martin Royalton-Kisch, Senior Curator of the Department of Prints and Drawings, The British Museum, gives a brief history of the evolution of drawing in France. As the title suggests, the earliest examples are from Jean Clouet who worked mainly as a portraitist for the French court in 1516, and upon his death his son, Francois Clouet, took over his position at court around 1540. Many drawings in the catalogue, for example Jean Clouet's "Portrait of a Young Woman" were done as studies for paintings. Francois Clouet was apparently commissioned by Catherine de Medici to do portraits of her children, and "Portrait of King Charles IX as a Young Boy" is shown in the catalogue.

Antoine Watteau is represented in 18th century work. As with many French artists before him, his use of red and black chalk was very effective, as in "Five Studies of a Woman's Head, One Lightly Sketched." White chalk was also used for these drawings.

The 19th century shows various artists such as Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres. His portrait of "Charles Hayard and his Daughter Marguerite, 1815" is done in graphite and shows the closeness of the father and daughter. Delacroix, Degas, Cezanne, Seurat and others are also among the 19th century artists.

Drawing #93 and final one is "Portrait of Marcelle Lender, c. 1893-95" by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec.
Each drawing in the book is given a full page and also a full page text of information about the artist and the drawing.

This is a very beautiful book that has good quality paper and also excellent quality reproductions on the pages. It is a book that I can never tire of reading and studying the artwork and even using to practice certain aspects of my own drawing. There are 95 works of art in the book, so there is a lot to study and read, but mostly to enjoy.

high quality and broad ranging catalogue of French drawings

The British Museum has a collection of around 3,500 French drawings; this catalogue presents 93 examples. It begins with a sensitive "Portrait of a Young Woman" by Jean Clouet (1480-1540) and ends with a charming "Portrait of Marcelle Lender" by Toulouse-Lautrec. Between are a succession of uniformly excellent drawings by artists familiar and unfamiliar. The former include works by Poussin, Lorrain (5), Watteau (4), Fragonard, Ingres, Corot and Degas.

It is sometimes the case that an exhibition has a few star pieces with the rest being second rate. This is certainly not the case with this British Museum survey; even the drawings by less familiar drawers are of high merit and interest. The quality of the reproductions and printing in general is well above average. Highly recommended.

excellent guide to belief change!

When was the last time that you changed your mind? I hope it was not long ago.
With this phrase, Sven Ove Hansson introduces the reader to the topic of his book: The Dynamics of Belief (usually referred to as belief revision or logic of theory change).
Who can be interested in belief dynamics? The list is long: philosophers that want a model for the behaviour of the rational agent with respect to his belief dynamics, or for the changes in scientific theories; legal theorists that seek a model that would represent the dynamics of amendments, promulgations or derogations in the legal codes; computer scientists that want a model to formalize the notion of updating databases and knowledge bases; etc.
The belief dynamics was introduced in the late 70's, and the seminal paper of Alchourron, Gardenfors and Makinson 1985, where they presented the (later called) AGM model, became its main milestone.
The AGM model was used as a formal framework to characterize the dynamics and state of belief of a rational agent \footnote{{\sc Peter G{a}rdenfors}. " Knowledge in Flux: Modeling the Dynamics of Epistemic States}. The MIT Press, Cambridge, 1988.}. The beliefs are represented by sets of sentences closed under logical consequence (belief sets). Further works (in which Hansson was one of the most important researchers) extended the model to non-closed set of sentences (belief bases).
In the AGM framework, the dynamics of belief recognizes three basic operations: Expansion consists simply in adding a new belief to the corpus of belief. Revision, related to expansion, incorporates new beliefs, but, as opposed to expansion, consistency is preserved. Consequently, the revision process must eliminate enough sentences to avoid contradiction with the new belief. Contraction occurs when some beliefs are retracted but no new belief is added.
These changes have the following constraints (in priority order): {\bf 1.} " Primacy of new information}: the new information is always accepted {\bf 2.} " Consistency}: if possible, the new belief set must be consistent {\bf 3.} " Minimal loss of previous beliefs}: This criteria attempts at retaining as much of the old beliefs as possible. \\
In the 80's the AGM model acquired the status of a standard model, and was characterized in at least five different equivalent ways: " Postulates, partial meet functions, epistemic entrenchment, safe/kernel contraction" and " sphere-systems".\\
In the 90's, the AGM model was extended, generalized and modified. Among these extensions, we can mention: Non prioritized belief revision, iterable belief change functions, withdrawal functions, modal logics for theory change, hidden structures of beliefs, etc..
In this book, Sven Ove Hansson made an exhaustive description of the AGM model and its equivalent presentations, both in belief sets and belief bases. He also included a wide compilation of the approaches mentioned above developed until the end of 1993 and some further developments. The book has two major achievements: It bridges the gap of a textbook on this subject (the only previous one was the mentioned Gardenfors' book) and provides a deep study of the dynamics in belief bases, needed to apply the AGM model to real contexts.
The book is perfectly oriented to teach courses in belief dynamics, and provides a list of suggested courses (page 1) according to the level of the audience.
Each chapter is divided into two parts: the first one is more colloquial and useful to understand the intuitions, the construction and the purposes of the different approaches. The second one, marked in all cases with ``+", is devoted to the formal apparatus of the previous part. In the "informal" part, the theorems and properties are explained, but the proofs are left to the ``+" parts (in some of them, new and more elegant proofs are provided).
Chapter 1 introduces belief dynamics and the basic tools needed to represent beliefs: logical consequence, belief sets, belief bases, expansions, remainder sets. Chapter 2 explains contraction, including the five AGM presentations and the representation theorems that show the equivalence among them. This chapter also opens the discussion to alternative models like Severe contraction, or Levi's contraction. Chapter 3 is devoted to revision, its different presentations, alternative models and its relation with contraction. In Chapter 4, Hansson introduces an analysis which relates changes in belief bases to changes at "knowledge level"\footnote{See: {\sc Allen Newell}. The knowledge level. " Artificial Intelligence 18\/} (1982), 87--127.}. Chapter 5 presents two extension for the representation language: modal sentences and conditional sentences. Introducing the latter in the representation of belief is incompatible with the Ramsey test. This incompatibility is well known as " Gardenfors impossibility theorem}. Chapter 6 introduces the reader to open problems.

To sum up, this book is an excellent guide to belief change researchers who need a summary of the area. It is also an excellent textbook for beginners who can read the book by following any of the courses suggested.
