Must Read for Kilimanjaro trekking

This book was indispensable for our ascent up Kilimanjaro this March 2012. It was just chock full of information and prepared us very well for each day's journey up the mountain. Although, it was out of stock and had to buy it new for $21 from an Amazon Used book seller, I am very happy with the purchase. It not only includes flora and fauna, but descriptions of the geology and climates which make Kilimanjaro so unique and will give you a deeper appreciation as you ascend "pole, pole -slowly, slowly". It gives very good descriptions of the many climbing routes and gives you a description of what you will encounter during each day of your route. The descriptions of the Kilimanjaro towns are good but could be cross referenced (lodging, restaurants, internet availability...) on line before you go as Tanzania is moving forward with change, too. Grab this book and go. You will not ever regret your days spent on Kilimanjaro. Although it is a hefty little book, we took it on our climb and read it during the day before we retired early each night. Cheers and good luck.

If You're Heading To Kili Get This Book!

I purchased this book, along with several others, in preparation for a Kilimanjaro climb. This book is the only one I've reread (several times over). I was gratified by the detailed help the book offers in preparing for the climb-but I was most impressed by the quality of the writing. It's not often you get something that's both informative and well-written. This is the only guidebook that will be making the trip with me to Kilimanjaro. I'll add to this review when I return.

Back from a successful trip to the summit of Kilimanjaro in January 2011. Carried this guide with me and found it indispensable, especially the description of summit night from Barafu to Uhuru. If you're going to climb Kili get this book. I still read the climb sections to remind me of this spectacular trip.

Very thorough and descriptive

This was a great book to have on the mountain. Each night before bed we would read about the next day's hike. The graphic next to each day's hike showing elevation gain and loss was also extremely helpful just to help us know what was in store. Our guide did not have good things to say about this book (perhaps because he took issue with the tipping guide, saying it was out of date and too low). There were definitely parts of the narrative that we didn't agree with (i.e. Day 2 on Machame is definitely not the "easiest" day), but his description of summit night to Stella Point is pretty spot on. Worth the purchase price.

She tracks in detail the internal deliberations in the formative years of development in the Kingdom, when priorities were defined. This unique strategy was first formulated by the royal family in a document known as the "Ten Point Programme," which was delivered in a speech (Nov. 1962) by Crown Prince Faysal. In practice, this strategy placed severe limitations on potential social change and thwarted any reform of the political system that might have been expected had such development been carried out by more western-oriented countries. While Saudi Arabia today tries to mend past errors, particularly in its educational system, the fundamentals of the regime have remained as they were shaped during the formative decades of development. Whether Saudi Arabia will be able to modernise its society without social and religious upheaval still remains to be seen, but the course this modernisation takes will be determined by the events outlined in this book.

As previous poster said the new 3rd edition is to be released in 2015. DO NOT GET PRICE GOUGED BY THESE SELLERS!! The new copy will have all color print while this 2nd ed is black and white. Unless this is a must have now wait until Cornell finishes the publication of the 3rd edition.

Simply Wonderful

The folks at Cornell have done it again. This is a huge book, packed full of information, but it is also a joy to read. Even though it supplies plenty of the "encyclopedic" material, it's a bit reminiscent of David Attenborough's "Life of Birds" DVD, in that it highlight some of the "gee-whiz" aspects of birds, such as egg mimicry, artistic bower construction, lymphatic penises in ducks, and so forth. There was a surprising section on nocturnal birding by ear, which I had never seen addressed. They seem to have covered every topic and then some.

If you have only a casual interest in birds, this book may be overkill, but if you are a birder or ornithology student I'm sure you'll enjoy deepening your appreciation and understanding of birds with the help of this book.

Overpriced out of print, wait for 3rd ed

Just FYI, I have only flipped through this book briefly and do not actually own a copy, though I would very much like to.

However, the current prices offered by third party sellers on this site and others are tremendously inflated. While the book is no longer in print, it was originally sold new by Cornell for $100. Obviously, prices like $300 for a used copy are a bit exorbitant. However, Cornell IS working on a 3rd edition that they will sell, so if you can wait, you will once again be able to purchase this book at a reasonable price sometime in the future.

Great for the online student

This book should be a must for any online curriculum. It covers the realm of netiquette as well as learning styles. If a person doesn't know how she or he learns the best in order to retain more, then the success of online learning is diminished proportionately.

If there are any students just beginning an online curriculum, or any students that have to take just one online class, this guide will help you get the most bang for your bucks. Nothing is more frustrating than spending an huge amount of money and getting almost nothing in return. Plus, it will help you to win friends and influence people online, give you great insight to your fellow students and instructor, and make you smell good... well, maybe not the last, but certainly the first two.
