Every teacher should have this

I'm a Behavior Analyst, I had this text for a class in graduate school and it was ruined in a flood. I work with children on the Autism Spectrum and use the book as a resource for Autistic Support teachers, but it's actually valuable to any teacher. It provides detailed information about basic and some slightly advanced ABA principles and how to implement. It covers everything from teacher to student interaction, peer to peer interaction, and self regulating technique. It makes clear that learning IS behavior.

Most textbooks on aerodynamic design of the aircraft can be grouped either in a class of books where the emphasis is on fluid dynamics, with particular attention to Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), or in a class of books mainly useful for preliminary design, where relations are presented between design requirements, resultant dimensions and basic shapes of the main aircraft components. The latter class usually pays little attention to flow physics.

In Aerodynamic Design of Transport Aircraft, an effort is made to bridge the gap between these two classes of textbooks. Although few formula are presented, relations are discussed in a descriptive manner between airflow characteristics, design requirements for the aircraft's main components as they contribute to the aircraft's overall performance, stability, control characteristics and the resulting detailed shapes.

In 45 chapters the text moves from first principles through the whole gamut of theoretical approaches backed up by a wealth of experimental and flight trials data. Modern swept-wing-, tail-surface- and control-surface-design is discussed. Chapters are devoted to the effect of propeller slipstream on stability and control, subsonic engine intakes and exhausts, and the estimation of aircraft weight and drag. The final part of the book covers certification requirements related to aerodynamic design and presents a general discussion on flight safety.

Ed Obert joined the Fokker Aircraft Company in 1964. His last position in a 32-year career was as Head of Flight Physics. He was also appointed part-time Professor at the Aerospace Faculty of Delft University of Technology, a position he held for 9 years.

Absolutely invaluable modern text on aerodynamic design

I bought the book not long after its release and have meant to write a detailed review for some time. It surprises me that after almost 2 years there has been 0 review on Amazon for this amazing title on the scarcely discussed topic of aerodynamic design. Have my like-minded peers been secretly buying and using this book without giving a review in the hope of denying hesitant potential readers of knowing just how important this book is?
I decide to wait no longer and simply state the following:

This is simply the only book perhaps for many years that contains an almost up-to-date (discusses A380 and 777) treatment of the PRACTICAL aspects of the aerodynamic design applied to transport aircraft. This book is written by an career aerodynamicist, about the REAL DEAL stuff, for engineers. It is a matter-of-factly compilation of the trade with rich illustration taken from the literature that otherwise will take you either many solid years of full-time research on your own or a personal aerodynamic design couch to obtain. The fact that this book both satisfy a rarely satified need and is GOOD means anyone with serious interest in studying and doing actual aerodynamic design in the industry should read this book.

Problems it does have. For starters it leaves me wanting for MORE simply because what it already has is GOOD. Another problem is that I think some of the more important parts, such as the one on wing modification to obtain good isobar patterns deserves more in-depth discussion.

That's basically what comes to my mind right now and should convince those who come to this page, are excited, but hesitant because of the price issue to make a decision...

About the Author
Stefan Zweig (1881-1942) was an outstanding Austrian novelist, playwright, journalist, and biographer whose work became very popular in the US, South America, and Europe especially between the 1920s and 1930s. In 1904 he earned his doctorate degree in philosophy at the University of Vienna. Throughout his life he remained a pacifist, and instead of becoming a soldier at the start of World War I, he worked in the Archives of the Ministry of War. He became friends with notable people in history, including Romain Rolland, Sigmund Freud, and Arthur Schitzler. Among his most famous writings are Beware of Pity, Chess Story, and his memoir The World of Yesterday.

beautiful coming of age novella

So many, many coming of age stories s abound... Yet this is special & so magically, deeply reminds me (for some reason-perhaps it's pathos between mother & son) of the singularly great Irwin Shaw's " LUCY CROWN", read that one as well, please.

Poetry and Metaphor

When you come across writing steeped in poetry and metaphor, and almost unconsciously so, you know you're in the presence of something unique. And this describes the work of Stefan Zweig. I read his novella, Chess, and The Burning Secret in quick succession and I'm in awe of his writing. In terms of plot, very little happens in any conventional sense, but in terms of the reach and scope of his fiction, a thousand things occur in a very short time.
In The Burning Secret, the young boy, Edgar, is overwhelmed with pride and gratitude when the Baron, a stranger from the adult world, shows him friendship and respect. This attention is short-lived, however, as the Baron's real intentions are towards Edgar's mother.
Initially oblivious to this and with an innocence gradually infused with knowingness, the action of the novel derives from Edgar's hurt, confusion, frustration, jealousy, anger and fierce determination to uncover the 'secret' motivating the seemingly bizarre behaviour of the adults.
And this is another strength (amongst many) in Zweig's book. The characters are so deftly and concisely drawn and yet so rich in psychological detail. We see the world through the eyes of a child whose rejection runs deep and, as adult readers, we also know the 'secret' Edgar is desperately trying to find out. Our inside knowledge versus Edgar's 'innocence' casts the adult behaviour in a somewhat absurd and ridiculous light. Thus, we empathise even more closely with the distress he suffers at the adults' ludicrous attempts to deceive him.
This double layer of perception - child protagonist/adult reader - enables Edgar's journey to be grasped for what it is: his adolescent sexual awakening. Running parallel to this, and only revealed at the end, is the journey of Edgar's mother. Her sexual journey ends where Edgar's begins and although the reasons behind this are far from 'pure', there is a sense of some form of reconciliation as the story ends on both a note of closure and a new beginning.
A brilliant book.

Full of well-known platitudes

I'm running a startup, and was excited to see a new addition of project management from HBR. Boy was I disappointed at the quality of information in this book. I've seen better blogs. The book is just a collection of well-known axioms, like identify stake-holders and make sure you have regular meetings. I don't think you need to go to Harvard to have such common sense. I picked a random place in the book, and here is a sample (inane quote):
"“A project’s purpose is the general benefit it will provide to the organization,” explains Alex Walton, a Florida-based project consultant. “Its scope comprises the particular elements (or product attributes) that the project team can control and has agreed to deliver.” Duh! (Heck, the qualifications of the person their quoting is simply he lives in Florida and does project consulting. This also speaks to how much thought is put into the book.)

What I was looking for --- techniques for creating project plans and specific techniques for management --- are completely missing. Stay away if you want to learn something.

I love this book. I have been in management before when I was younger 12-15 years ago and it is nice to see the something in writing that fits the way a business manager, supervisor etc.... should run his/her ship! Fast, I mean fast on their shipment! Thanks guys!
