Most helpful in expected and unexpected ways, this book is a must read for ALL business people.

I’ve long enjoyed the impact of a story to drive a position, but have never had a model to fully develop a quality story. This genuinely reads like someone that has put in the 10,000 hours plus of bringing the concept into the field, and subsequently perfected the model. The overall model itself makes story development seamless. And this was something that I and my business needed urgently.

This book has helped me both personally and professionally. But I want to speak to the area of greatest impact. As a small business owner, this book is a game changer for two critical problems we’ve faced.

First, we are a company with 40+ years of history. We’ve seen a lot of growth and change in our own industry and the industries we serve. And we struggle with telling the stories of our experiences. We have no repository of any, and when something in alignment comes up in a sales meeting, we have missed opportunities.

At my company, we have a great story to tell overall about who we are, what we do, and why. I've spent the past year struggling with getting something on paper. I didn’t have to read far to get there (page 30), and in ten minutes, we have an elevator story to tell anyone, from the POTUS to my 9-year old niece what we do. Running through our experiences over the years, we have a list of somewhere around 10 different scenarios we face when meeting with a prospect. And we have more than 10 great stories we can have ready at the helm.

Then the surprising, expected, and welcome outcome is solving problem #2. Our second problem is with employee engagement. Among the many wins from this book, this was the unexpected. My partners and I came to realize a year or so ago that one of our challenges of engagement is our need to articulate the magnitude that our employees have on solving problems for our clients. But it is not as simple as saying, “Hey Will, you solved a fifty-thousand-dollar problem today for Widget Co!” For the client, the impact is apparent, but employees in all companies often do not understand the impact of their efforts. But armed with a story, and all the tools imparted by Smith, we now have a powerful way to express our gratitude to our employees.

This book gets right to action. I enjoy that Smith executes the argument for the concept itself flawlessly, and then moves on. I find it frustrating when an author spends the bulk of their content reminding us of the validity of their original claim(s). The examples offered and the execution about each component drive buy-in without you having to revisit the original claim.

This is a book should be on the shelf of every business person that has something worth saying and something worth buying.

Already Using This To Build My Stories!

We know how critical stories are in connecting and engaging our customers. But if you’re like me, I struggle with developing and telling stories that are supportive of what I’m trying to accomplish. It’s so much more natural to go to the data, or the facts. But these don’t capture our customer’s imaginations.

Paul’s written a brilliant guide to help each of us leverage the power of story telling. First, he discusses the importance of aligning the story with where the customer is in their buying process/where we are in the selling process. The most appropriate stories in introducing ourselves to prospects are very different than those we use in presenting our solutions, closing, and even after we’ve gotten the order. After that foundation, he goes in to great detail in how to create powerful sales stories.

I tried his approach for a major presentation at for a group of top sales executives. The speech is coming up in a few weeks, but in preparing the speech and practicing it on a few people, incorporating stories has changed the impact and effectiveness of what I communicate. Paul’s guide will be the cornerstone to all my future speeches, and to most of my prospecting calls.

If you struggle with developing and leveraging high impact stories in your sales process, Paul’s book is a great guide to help you learn how to construct your own.

A Book for Salespeople and Leaders

When I first saw the title I wondered why I would need to read it. As soon as the author Paul Smith shared the story of the experiment selling items on eBay I was hooked. The author shared the results of a test selling items on eBay and how having a story in the description allowed them to sell at a higher price. After reading that I immediately began thinking about situations where using a story would help me be more convincing.

The beauty of the book is how it is also an instructional book to help you learn how to craft and use stories to convey your position. After reading the book I would highly recommend it not just for sales people but anyone who in a position where you need to communicate with others.

Warren Ellis took over a rather (imho) lackluster book when he came onto Stormwatch and made it shine. What followed were some amazing tales which really laid the ground work for the now classic series, The Authority. Towards the end of Stormwatch, this one-shot was released which is ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL if you're a fan of Stormwatch and The Authority. So what happens when one of the greatest writers working today sets out to tell a tale involving Stormwatch and the Wildcats tussling with one of the greatest creatures of twentieth century film? Absolute chaos and bloodshed ensue. This may seem like hyperbole since it's said so often in comics and other media but be warned because NOTHING WILL EVER BE THE SAME. Great read, highly recommended.

Biblical Dance - Missing in the Church Today.

Soon after the author was saved she was shocked at the lack of creative expression in the church. To the reader of this great book "Dance is a spontaneous result of a heart that is full of joy, love, passion, desire, or even pain." There is so much more for us today in the Church of Jesus Christ. Reach for this! The author Heather Clark has pushed the right button for the church today. Her book is a practical guide to worship and dance in the church. Heather provides her testimony and in her writings she guides us to know and understand the anointed dance for each Christian as they worship their Lord.

A Guide to Expressing Worship Through Dance

Heather Clark's book "Dance as the Spirit Leads" is as practical as it is innovative. Heather is a pioneer, paving the way for a new generation of worshippers integrating dance as an expression of worship. She provides a fresh approach to Biblical dance applicable for contemporary worship.

Clark describes dance in worship as "...a spontaneous result of a heart that is full of joy, love, passion, desire, or even pain." She shares her own personal testimony and background telling of her formative years in her development in the creative arts.

Heather describes and lists various forms of dance mentioned in the Old and New Testaments. She uses Miriam as an illustration of the prophetic dance and David as an example of the celebratory dance. She talks about colors as spiritual symbols and gives an overview of dance history and the development of the spiritual dance.

Neal Stephenson enjoys cult status among science fiction fans and techie types thanks to Snow Crash, which so completely redefined conventional notions of the high-tech future that it became a self-fulfilling prophecy. But if his cyberpunk classic was big, Cryptonomicon is huge... gargantuan... massive, not just in size (a hefty 918 pages including appendices) but in scope and appeal. It's the hip, readable heir to Gravity's Rainbow and the Illuminatus trilogy. And it's only the first of a proposed series--for more information, read our interview with Stephenson.

Cryptonomicon zooms all over the world, careening conspiratorially back and forth between two time periods--World War II and the present. Our 1940s heroes are the brilliant mathematician Lawrence Waterhouse, cryptanalyst extraordinaire, and gung ho, morphine-addicted marine Bobby Shaftoe. They're part of Detachment 2702, an Allied group trying to break Axis communication codes while simultaneously preventing the enemy from figuring out that their codes have been broken. Their job boils down to layer upon layer of deception. Dr. Alan Turing is also a member of 2702, and he explains the unit's strange workings to Waterhouse. "When we want to sink a convoy, we send out an observation plane first.... Of course, to observe is not its real duty--we already know exactly where the convoy is. Its real duty is to be observed.... Then, when we come round and sink them, the Germans will not find it suspicious."

All of this secrecy resonates in the present-day story line, in which the grandchildren of the WWII heroes--inimitable programming geek Randy Waterhouse and the lovely and powerful Amy Shaftoe--team up to help create an offshore data haven in Southeast Asia and maybe uncover some gold once destined for Nazi coffers. To top off the paranoiac tone of the book, the mysterious Enoch Root, key member of Detachment 2702 and the Societas Eruditorum, pops up with an unbreakable encryption scheme left over from WWII to befuddle the 1990s protagonists with conspiratorial ties.

Cryptonomicon is vintage Stephenson from start to finish: short on plot, but long on detail so precise it's exhausting. Every page has a math problem, a quotable in-joke, an amazing idea, or a bit of sharp prose. Cryptonomicon is also packed with truly weird characters, funky tech, and crypto--all the crypto you'll ever need, in fact, not to mention all the computer jargon of the moment. Stephenson mixes historical and contemporary settings, handling both with great skill, as he presents a large cast of vividly imagined characters, notably including the original code breaker's granddaughter, and makes both the tale's technology and its conspiracies highly believable. His choice to tell the entire story in the present tense rather calls attention to itself, and, given a book nearly 1,000 pages long, every word is not really essential. Still, this is a book that should be bought for the sake of saying that you have it and read, however long that takes, for the pleasure and intellectual stimulation it is likely to give to most readers. Neal Stephenson's latest book, Cryptonomicon, will appeal to a wider fan base that his previous novels. Having read all of Stephenson's previous novels (with the exception of the elusive The Big U) I was surprised to find this book lacking in ultra-futuristic technology, and presented as more of a straight war story/business suspense novel. As usual, Stephenson's character development and prose is amazing, and if you work in high-tech or mathematics you will instantly realize how well Stephenson knows the personalities of these people. As with Snow Crash, the book takes a while to get up to speed, but once it does you'll find yourself not wanting to put it down. As other reviewers have mentioned, there are many potentionally confusing plot twists, so the reader must pay close attention at times or risk getting lost. Stephenson also gives a thorough grounding in the mathematics of cryptography, although the pages of formulas and explanations can thankfully be skimmed by the mathematically-challenged (like myself) without losing the story. The book also doesn't fall apart towards the end as many thought Snow Crash did - in fact, at one point you will smack your forehead when you realize how everything fits together, and you can't wait to see how it ends. Overall, an excellent read.

A joy to read. . .

Going in to CRYPTONOMICON, I had absolutely no idea what to expect. I'd never read anything by Neal Stephenson, nor had I read any blurbs or reviews of the book. However, it had appeared on enough "Best Book" lists that I decided to give it a try. And boy am I glad I did.
This novel is fun, huge, funny, rambling, witty, and sprawling. It is clever, engaging, and well-paced. It is full of quirky, eccentric, immensely likeable characters, crazy, interesting ideas, and amusing, often hilarious, looks at various situations including, but not limited to, mathematics, life, how to eat Cap'n Crunch properly, the purpose of beards, and well, just about anything else you can think of. Obviously, then, this book is not for everyone. Those who like tight, meticulously pared-down straightforward stories may not be able to get into this one.
For me, though, as you may have guessed from the title of the review, this book was an absolute joy to read. The books chapters cycled between four main characters, and every time I finished a chapter I found myself in an awkward position: I didn't want to go on, because I wanted to keep reading about the character I'd been following. However, by the end of the first paragraph of the next chapter, I'd be feeling the same way about the next character in the cycle. It was an odd feeling, and a tribute to the skill with which Stephenson created these characters that each of them was so completely engaging.
In addition to the main characters, the settings and situations were vivid and well-drawn. Despite this books immensity and its tendency to ramble at length about inanity, it never got boring, and always retained its charm. Stephenson provides us with a very amusing outlook on life.
However, this book is not without flaws, the two biggest of which have been noted in previous reviews:
1) Women. There are no really well-developed female characters. Most of the women have virtually no "screen time" at all, and the one who does have quite a bit of time is not fully realized as a character. It would have been very helpful to have gotten inside her head once in a while.
2) The ending. This book kind of just ends, without resolving properly. It feels like it just cuts off, and that was kind of unsatisfactory. Randy's story deserved at least another chapter or an epilogue of some sort to tie-up the plot. Alas, Stephenson, at the end, couldn't deliver.
So, as I've said, this book is delightfully readable, and if not for the sudden ending, would easily have garnered a 5/5 rating. I'm definitely looking forward to the next CRYPTONOMICON book (which, if I'm not mistaken, is intended to stand alone; it will not be a sequel, per se).

A Literary Rubik's Cube

When "Cryptonomicon" came out in 1999, this sloppy masterpiece opened writers' and readers' minds as to the possibilities of time-jumps and maximum parallel plot lines in contemporary (non-science) fiction. I've read the book twice now, most recently earlier this year. The first time I was swept away by the triple-plus plot and three-books-in-one approach. So much so, I loosely patterned my first novel along similar kitchen-sink lines though, crucially (mercifully?), "Sea of Lies" takes place over eight days and not fifty years. Stephenson can really tell a story, and builds tension with those cuts among complementary plot lines from WWII through to the present. He's one of the very best at doing so, and his firsthand research lends additional credibility.

My major criticism is that Neal's editor was on vacation when he submitted this manuscript. It's about 1000 pages instead of being an 800 page gorilla. But what's there is so good that the reader plunges on regardless to find out what happens next to the Waterhouses and Shaftoes (e.g.). I particularly enjoyed reading Stephenson's take on the breaking of the Enigma codes at Bletchley Park and the fate of the Philippines gold.

Stephenson went on to write many other books, but I think his three strongest were "Snowcrash", "Diamond Age" and this giant semi-polished gem.
