Hass ( Human Wishes ) defers to the complex syntactical gaps that separate the Japanese and English languages, calling his translations "versions." Here he presents three masters of the haiku form: Basho (1644-1694), the haiku poet most familiar to English readers; Buson (1716-1783), a visually oriented writer renowned in his time as a painter; and Issa (1763-1827), whose work is most poignant when he utilizes his ironic wit. Hass's obsessions, as evidenced by his other work, can be fitted under two rubrics, grief and pleasure, and he chooses a fair number of haiku to represent these poles. Yet the poems that merely observe nature's cyphers are most absorbing. Hass's signature is apparent in the mixture of sensual and temporal imagery: "The jars of octopus-- / brief dreams / under the summer moon" (Basho). Buson's images settle in the mind for days with their lush, unexpected vistas: "A field of mustard, / no whale in sight, / the sea darkening." Yet, surprisingly, it is Issa's haiku which may appeal most to Western readers. His benignly sardonic grasp of experience resonates with our late 20th-century cynicism: "New Year's Day-- / everything is in blossom! / I feel about average." Or: "I'm going out, / flies, so relax, / make love." Hass also includes samplings of each poet's prose, giving a deeper notion of their individual world views and aesthetics. Richly annotated, with illuminating essays on the poets and Japanese poetics, this anthology significantly broadens the pleasure of haiku for anyone unable to read them in the original.

Many versions of these simple poems exist in English, yet translators, who are often poets themselves, are led back to them time and time again by the urge somehow to get closer to the mark. This distinguished collection gathers together the three most highly regarded practitioners of haiku from different periods in Japanese history. The translations are presented in a fresh setting that offers a great deal of valuable background on the haiku form, the verse conventions from which it grew, and the difficulties inherent in translating from the Japanese. Examples from the prose works of each poet are included as well. The haiku stand on their own quite nicely in these strong versions, but the accompanying material and comparative context make this an attractive and valuable collection. Highly recommended.

Keep a Copy at Work and at Home

I always find myself returning to this lovely collection
of haiku by Basho, Buson and Issa.
The translations capture both the distinctive styles of
the masters as well as the oft-mentioned "aha moment".
I have only to turn a few pages to feel inspiration,
motivation, exaltation and profound gratitude for these
brief jewels. How they transcend time and place!
Hass helpfully provides a wonderful introduction and
notes for these exquisitely crafted haiku. A recommended
book for the novice and advanced reader/writer/lover
of haiku.

A good book to add to any poetry collection

This book is a collection of haiku by three great Japanese masters- Basho, Buson and Issa who all lived between the seventeenth and the nineteenth centuries.
The book is divided into four sections, one on each master, followed by a section containing Basho's thoughts on haiku in general. Each of the first three sections starts with a brief but good introduction to the master followed by the translations of his haiku. Each section concludes with other pieces of writing (prose and haiku) by the poet. This helps to give a picture of the person behind the poem and some idea of the life and times that the poet lived in. Not being familiar with life in Japan from a few centuries ago, I found this very helpful in getting a better understanding of the context in which the poems are set.
There are notes at the back which explain some of the nuances and anything significant one has to know about certain Haiku. It helps to keep this in mind when reading the haiku. The fourth section in the book "Basho on Poetry" is a joy to read, and captures the spirit of Haiku. Each sentence here is worth preserving! There is also a list of books for further reading which I found useful.
Overall, this book is a good addition to the library, whether one is interested in writing Haiku or not.

Three Masters in the Haiku Tradition

This book features versions of about one hundred poems by each of three masters in haiku tradition, Matsuo Basho (1644-1694), Yosa Buson (1716-1783), and Kobayashi Issa (1763-1827). The introduction tells us that according to Japanese literary criticism, these three men represent three types of the poet. Basho is seen as the ascetic and seeker, Buson the artist, and Issa the humanist. The differences in each poet's style can be seen at a glance. This book contains interesting short biographies of each of the men as well as some of their prose and notes on the poems. There are a few interesting black and white illustrations throughout the book including some by Yosa Buson himself. The introduction by Robert Hass is a superb introduction to haiku itself.
These beautiful three line poems, located in Nature with their implied Buddhist reflection are each a meditation, a centering, and a crystalline moment of realization. Reading them has a way of bringing about calm and peace within the reader. The symbolism of the seasons and the Japanese habit of mind blend together in these poems to create an alchemy of reflection that is unsurpassed in literature. The exquisite skill of these three masters make their subject matter seem completely organic, without artifice. Each poem contains a unique "Ah!" experience because they pierce directly to the soul, activating the human capacity for seeing with a still mind and an observing heart.
If you are new to haiku this is a wonderful compendium of the best of the genre. If you are already a lover of haiku this book is a delightfully compact, essential package, a real treasure you are sure to enjoy again and again.

My Review:
This book had me riveted from page one and I can't even pinpoint why, but the story was so completely fascinating. I really enjoyed every minute of reading it.

The book opens with Adam...hard-rocker, Adam, on the final night of the band's tour in Chicage. He's drunk and stoned and tired of the party in the motel room so hops in a cab to go to Milwaukee....and ends up at a lakefront resort he remembers from his childhood in Illinois instead. The resort is closed now and has been the home of agoraphobic recluse, Miles, for the last ten years.

Miles is an artist who used to be Mike/Michael. It takes a long time for the full story to come out about exactly what happened to him to make him the way that he is now, but as a reader, you can tell that it was horribly traumatic. Miles is an illumination artist. He lives in one of the cabins on the property of the resort that his family owned. He hasn't left the property in ten years and is shocked to find Adam asleep on one of the outdoor lounge chairs. Because of his life now, he's completely socially awkward most the time. He doesn't understand subtle body-language cues or even sometimes the not so subtle ones. He's not normal...in the book he's described like someone who has Aspergers or Autism which seems accurate. The thing is, he was never that way before when he was Michael.

Adam realizes the changes to an extent. Michael was actually the crush that let Adam know he was gay when he was a teenager visiting the resort. That boy he knew had been outgoing and fun-loving...nothing like how Miles is now.

So you have one of the most famous lead singers in the country and a person who can't leave their property in the woods falling in love...*sigh* Throughout this book, I had no idea how the author was going to fix it so that they could work out as a couple. But *gah* I wanted it to work for them because when they are together on the property, they both are just right. But separate them, and things quickly fall apart....for both of them, not just Miles. It made for a great story.

I loved this book. The artistic aspect was gorgeous...both with Miles' illumination art and with Adam's song-writing. They both express themselves through their art and it's just gorgeous and romantic and beautiful. They also share a love of old movies that was a really nice detail in the story. There were moments in the story that were pure heartbreak and so difficult to read, but in the end I loved the story and was happy that it was one that I picked up. It left me with a smile on my face.

Good characters, but story quality petered out

I thought the characters were strong and unique. I liked the beginning of the story, but I felt that the later half was not nearly as good.
The characters are separated and I didn't think that they came back together enough for my liking. It only hinted at the happy ending and didn't really satisfy me.

A love story without romance

Let me start by saying this is a beautiful book. The storytelling is crisp and I found myself invested very quickly. The characters have enough twists to be unique and fresh - from the painter's past and his painting technique to the rocker and his struggles.

My only grief is that while it is a love story, there is little romance.

*** Possible Spoiler *** The characters spend more time apart than together. I love angst and uncertainties mixed into my romance but I prefer that the couple struggles together and grows together. Ultimately, this book felt like it was a story of two people who were forced to find their own path to come out on the other side. So really, how is this a romance?

I recommend this book as a well-crafted, wonderful read that will stay with you for days but in my opinion, it falls short of a romance.

About the Author
Wendy J. Schiff MS, RDN received her BS in biological health/medical dietetics and MS in human nutrition from The Pennsylvania State University. She has taught introductory foods and nutrition courses at the University of Missouri– Columbia as well as nutrition, human biology, and personal health courses at St. Louis Community College–Meramec. She has worked as a public health nutritionist at the Allegheny County Health Department (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) and State Food and Nutrition Specialist for Missouri Extension at Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Missouri. In addition to authoring Nutrition for Healthy Living and Nutrition Essentials: A Personal Approach, Wendy has coauthored a college-level personal health textbook and authored many other nutrition-related educational materials. Love it!

I absolutely love this book. I used it for my nutrition class in college, but it is simply a lovely book! I recommend it to anyone interested in nutrition, whether you are taking a class, raising a family or just interested in bettering your lifestyle. I found the pages beautifully laid out and the information worthwhile and informative.

Textbook looks great but do know when you order from this company ...

Textbook looks great but do know when you order from this company they do NOT provide a tracking number. When you choose regular shipping for your product(s), which is between I believe 4-14 days, it's going to take the longer period to get to you. My book took me 11 days to get to me, 3 weeks after I had started school. I had contacted the seller twice and both times they got back to me quickly, however did not follow up in finding the tracking of my textbook like they said they would which was a little frustrating.

A "Must Read" for educators, parents and kids!

"Let your Geek Flag" fly!!! I have thoroughly enjoyed this book - Alexandra Robbins does an amazing job (as usual)!

I am an educator of 26 years and a high school assistant principal. The information I have gotten from this book has certainly helped me to look at my student population in a totally, new light. Not only does Robbins examine the labels that students assign themselves and others and the harm it causes but "The Geeks" also looks at the way that the faculty that educates them treat students and each other. I had never thought of the way that faculty groups mirror the groups of students.

Also, it was an eye opener to think that the influence of the media has caused "mean girls" to be mean, as a way of protecting themselves. We often misunderstand and think that they mistreat other kids because they enjoy it. The fact is that many of these young ladies don't enjoy it at all but the influence of shows such as "Gossip Girl" and "90210," make it "cool" to be mistreat others. It is hard to believe that many students who are viewed as being a part of the "Popular Crowd" are truly miserable but lack the courage to leave for fear of rejection.

Embrace your geekiness!

I can confidently say, with this new book and the others I have read (The Overachievers & Pledged), Alexandra Robbins is one of the first people I know who has poignantly identified and openly discussed struggles in teens and young adults lives. I grew up in a very competitive area academically and socially. I was insecure loner who desperately tried to fit in, but always came up short. I can completely relate to the stories of the teens in this book. Their backgrounds and experiences all have things I'm sure everyone can identify with. Alexandra also does an excellent job of supplementing these stories with psychological and sociological data and experiments. This is an excellent read, and one that I found therapeutic. As an young adult and college student, I definitely have noticed that the quirks and oddities I used to be ashamed of, are things that I'm appreciated for now, and that I fully embrace as an adult. It is these experiences and books like "The Geeks Shall Inherit the Earth" that further inspire me to become a high school teacher, and make a difference in teens lives.

In her social documentary, Alexandra Robbins plunges into the treacherous waters of high schools across the country to tell the stories of six fringe students and one fringe teacher. She calls them by the labels we've all come to know and sometimes loathe: loner, popular bitch, nerd, new girl, weird girl, gamer, and band geek. What makes the book work is how the reader quickly gets caught up in each of these outsiders' separate soap operas. Robbins is adept at including the characters' thoughts, dialogue, and actions, giving it the feel of a novel splintered into seven sub-plots.

The organization of the book is a bit haphazard, with Robbins going willy-nilly from one character to the next, taking time outs here and there for pop psychology and looks at "studies" new and old. The purpose of this "science" is to show group dynamics and human behavior -- the how and the why to cruelty in school cafeterias and hallways. The arrangement can be discombobulating at times, but the story lines carry the day.

I especially like how Robbins included one teacher's story here to show how cliques and nasty games do NOT always disappear with age. In fact, there are "popular" teachers, too, who would much rather hang out with other popular teachers and ignore the nerdier ones. You'd think these behaviors would look transparently pitiful at the advanced ages of these teachers, but Robbins shows that you'd have to think again. Some people never learn, alas, though, in this book, a lot of the kids do. It is, in that sense and in the final analysis, a hopeful book. You'll find yourself cheering for these guys and girls, who should but probably do not take comfort in the fact that they have odds-on advantages to become successful in life after school -- and for the exact same reasons they were teased and ostracized in school. God loves irony, after all, making the Biblical title especially apt....

Asimov's Genius

Author Isaac Asimov is beloved for some of the most iconic science fiction ever. But he also had a gift for presenting difficult topics in a way that simplified them sufficiently to become accessible to the uninitiated. Such is the case with "Universe", where some of the most difficult concepts in celestial mechanics are made plain by Asimov's gift for teaching.
With luck, humankind will take a greater interest in the cosmos in the 21st century. Professor Stephen Hawking has predicted extinction for our human species unless we can accelerate our desire to reach other planets. It would help if all earthlings took a more serious look toward the stars.
"Universe" makes clear not only the history of our understanding of the cosmos and why it makes sense, he also tackles and successfully explicates some of the more difficult concepts to apprehend like quasars, star explosions, and black holes. Yes, this book is a couple of decades old, and therefore already somewhat "behind", but anyone interested in catching up in a hurry really ought to read this book first.

Very good book - did not find it to be "AP all the way or nothing"

I'm a working mother of a 2-month-old baby girl, our first child, preparing to return to work. I hesitated in buying this book because (1) I was dubious about Attachment Parenting (AP) and its merits and (2) there were so many negative reviews stating that the book is a major guilt trip for anyone who can't or won't follow the Sears's suggestions to the letter.

I absolutely did not find this book to be an attachment parenting manifesto. In fact, I was pleasantly surprised that many of the tenants of the AP movement are in line with my (desired) parenting style rather than some sort of granola/coffee shop socialist/impossible to execute approach to life with a child. The Sears give suggestions for all different scenarios, AP or not. For example, while they do state many times that breast feeding is best, they also give plenty of information about a safe and loving way to bottle feed if you can't or won't breastfeed. Other reviewers said that the book makes them feel that if they're not breastfeeding, sharing the bed, quitting their jobs, and wearing their baby everywhere (including to the bathroom), that they are horrible parents. I did not feel that way at all. The Sears provide different ways of handling feeding, sleeping, and so on, and encourage you to make your own choice. I have done some things that they have suggested, and some not. I breastfeed and waited 2 months before bottle feeding expressed milk. I've tried baby wearing, but I have one of those rare babies who doesn't like to be held a lot who screams her head off when I put her in a sling. So she spends a lot of time in her bouncy seat wherever I am, instead of on me. I did not quit my job, and she will be going into daycare soon. She does not sleep in our bed, as I am terrified of smothering her, and because I need some sleep myself. So she sleeps in a bassinet next to our bed and we're able to attend to her immediately. The Sears were pretty clear about being anti-pacifier and because of that we instructed the hospital not to give her one under any circumstance. After spending several consecutive hours with our fingers/thumbs in her mouth (and I couldn't put her to the breast for hours because of cracked and bleeding nipples), our resolve crumbled and we gave her a pacifier...then ran to the store to buy several more. But I didn't feel the need to throw away the book once we "went against" it.

I took the advice of another reviewer and combined this book with Penelope Leach's Your Baby and Child and have found both to be valuable resources.

The Sears' overall message (as well as Penelope Leach's) is that you need to be open-minded as a parent, and do what works best for your baby, for you, and your lifestyle. It will be next to impossible to find something that parrots back to you everything you think you should be doing--or want to be doing. Parenting is hard, and it is a learning experience. This book is a good guide (not instruction manual) through that process.

I love this book!!!

I used this book with my first child, then bought the ebook (not a Kindle, so I won't say!), then gave my hard copy to a friend. I then found another copy at the library bargain book sale and bought it for a friend who is pregnant. It's sooooo thorough. I love the Sears' philosophy. Parents should be loving, and do what works for them! But to get an idea of what people go through for their kids -- it's NOT ALWAYS EASY, but you don't become a parent to have an easy life, and you now have a little human who needs you. I think they give a really accurate picture of some of the time and energy it takes, but it will pay off when your child is independent, respectful, and loving. Don't short change your child later by taking shortcuts when they're babies. Yes, you will be sleep-deprived, scared of rolling over on your baby, and maybe people will look at you weird for sleeping with your baby or for nursing your toddler. But do what works for you, and, as they say in the book, say "My doctor says to do it" because Doctor Sears said so! I have no regrets -- nursed my oldest till he was two, shared our bed with him, and now we are doing the same with our second baby. Our oldest is just five and doing so well, so independent and caring!

Good for reference, take the attachment advice with salt...

I ordered this book toward the end of my pregnancy, after a friend recommended it to me...I had been more focused on planning for the birth and realized I had only one parenting book, so I didn't have time to do more research into what kind of book might be best suited for me. I had vaguely heard of attachment parenting in my childbirth class, but didn't necessarily plan on practicing any of it except for breastfeeding (to which I was 110 percent committed), and possibly baby-wearing (sounded interesting, the reported benefits made sense). I liked that it was over 700 pages, and was sure it would be comprehensive and full of great advice. I had no time to read it before my birth, it actually arrived a few days after my daughter was born.

It freaked me out in the early days so much that after a few weeks, I hated it and couldn't read it anymore. I agree with the review titled "the guilt trip book," it's totally how the book made me feel at that time! Over the course of the early months, I also read "What to Expect the First Year," given to me by a relative. I liked getting the Sears' perspective, then contrasting it with what was in "What to Expect," which delivered some of the same information, without advocating attachment parenting. I disagreed with some of the suggestions and approaches in that book too, which went too far in the opposite direction...so after the newborn stage was over, I could read the Baby Book with a new purpose, not of finding answers, but just of educating myself in the general sense, taking what I liked from it, and ignoring what I didn't like.

I agree that Dr. Sears DOES advocate getting to know your baby and doing whatever works best for *your* family, however, I think that message can get lost in the sometimes repetitive promotion of attachment parenting techniques. For example, baby wearing--I wanted to do it, but my daughter ended up being a very active baby, and was actually happier just playing by herself on the floor. She squirmed and cried to get out when I put her in the Moby wrap. Co-sleeping--my daughter slept just fine naturally on her own in her crib from about six weeks on, without my husband and I doing any kind of sleep training or "cry it out" (just lucky, I guess!) and my husband and I slept fine in our bed, using the baby monitor.

For me, the Baby Book is good to have around the house for reference, but I don't necessarily use it for advice.

A very Powerful Technique that anyone can do

I own one of Vianna's previous books, Go up and Work with God, and I've got to say this one is more than "expanded" as the title suggests. This is a whole new book, organized with way more flow and chalked full of 'extra' information and detail.
I personally use the technique taught in this book and learned it directly from the book. I took no course, just read the book and followed the instructions, it's that easy! I can feel tremendous energy and am having fantastic results!
Out of all the energy medicine books I've read this is the best. It's a hands on technique, little theory with a whole lot of practical.
Highly recommended for the beginner, novice and expert practitioner.

Best I've seen

OK, there are misspellings and grammatical mistakes, big deal, the information is really neat, and more importantly, it WORKS. This book is packed with useful information. I read it 5 times through, getting useful stuff each time. I have been able to master her methods from the book, though I do also plan to take a seminar. I got more results faster with this book than any other. She doesn't just talk about feelings, she notes that you can download feelings you lack. This book, along with Richard Bartlett's Matrix Energetics: The Science and Art of Transformation, was highly recommended in a LOA course I took. I went back and forth between them, which helped me understand each of them better. No rehashes here, this lady got her stuff pure. I got a copy for my daughter, for someone at work, and for my wife. I sent copies of her previous books to other friends. I have one thing to say on this book: YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now Vianna may perhaps have gotten somewhat too full of herself, in the last few years. She has detractors on the web. The book itself is good. I would probably not take any courses with Vianna, based on what her students have told me, but then again I don't need to, I have this book. Now you do have to enter into the Theta state, the zero point state, the state of pure consciousness, for any of this to work.The Secret of Instant Healing, The Physics of Miracles: Tapping in to the Field of Consciousness Potential, Dowsing and Manifesting, Healing with Quantum Energy and DNA Demystified, Volume 1: A Practical Guide to Reprogramming the 13 Helixes at Zero Point approach this subject from similar places. I tried the techniques myself, and they worked for me. The detractors seem to want to force every theory into their own little boxes. This doesn't work. You have to enter into the world of the author of any book, to understand it. When I was studying calculus, which I found difficult, I had to enter it from the textbook author's viewpoint, to do anything. I couldn't force that text into my own restricted ideas. Same with this. The people giving it high marks do so from inside the book; the detractors clearly never entered into what the book is talking about. Oh well. One energy/feeling I downloaded was for my life to be better than the best I could imagine, a la Neville Goddard. At work, they did a workload equalization, which I hadn't seen or heard of in 20 years. Things aren't perfect, but they are- yes- better than the best I could have imagined, when I started. When my newborn daughter was in the hospital, she was getting vaccines, which would give her high fevers, really high, enough that the nurses got really nervous. I alternated between Matrix Energetics and this book, as this was all I had to read for 3 weeks in the hospital as I stayed with my daughter- my wife was sick- and each time, the fevers went down. Of course this was no kind of medical treatment, only an altering of patterns, however I was very convinced the book was useful. Other problems just kind of melted away. This book, and the other books I've cited, are the first steps into the world of human scale Quantum Mechanics, out of the Cartesian/Newtonian paradigm that physics left over 100 years ago, but which society is only now starting to leave. Books on shamanic work make a lot more sense in the light of Theta Healing. Heck, there are scientists who think we are only a bunch of chemicals. That's fine- but that is only their viewpoint. I want as many viewpoints as I can get- as with Neils Bohr's multi-model concept- so I can get some idea of what is real. This book helped and helps me.

Have you read Vianna Stibal's amazing books, Go Up and Seek God and Go Up and Work with God? Well, don't fret, this book is a compilation of those two plus a new healing modality on "feelings." That's right, this book contains guidelines on how you can download certain feelings you'd like to have.

This is advance healing work where you go to Theta (slow your brainwaves enough to completely connect with your subconscious) and change your mental programs. Why do I call this advance? The healing takes place in another plane, so you astral travel. You check the DNA codes (see it) and change it around to heal certain conditions like near sightedness, aging, etc.

Learn to explore your own creativity.

I once heard great advice from one of the most talented drummers I met at a Guitar Center one day. After watching him move effortlessly around the kit with full control and fluidity I nagged him for tips. He asked me "Do you practice your rudiments?", which I quickly responded "Yes, I practice my rudiments for 30 mins every single day -" he interrupted and said "Instead of doing that - play your freakin' drums!". He showed me his average-at-best paradiddle skill, which I could match myself, however there is no way I could match his ability on the actual kit. He told me that although it's important to practice rudiments - especially to develop hand technique initially - it's more important to practice creativity. This advice eventually lead me to this book.

My practice routine has changed dramatically because of this advice and this book. Instead of spending hours treating drumming as set of drills I am almost completely focused on applying myself creatively. I try to treat my drumming now as an artistic expression rather then an exercise in speed. There are roadblocks though - you can't really express your own creativity to its full potential if you don't have the limb independence and creative spark. That's where this book comes in. Not only is this book great for finding your inner-artist, it's great for helping you develop the required techniques to express yourself. This new attitude towards drumming has helped me improve by leaps and bounds.

No, I'm not saying to never practice rudiments or basic hand-exercises like those found in Stick Control - they will help you develop and maintain the required hand techniques. I'm just saying that you shouldn't make this your primary focus. This book helps you learn to explore yourself, buy it.
